Buckyballs have some really remarkable qualities, but it is the buckytubes which have applications in some amazing nanotech.
There is some thought that Smalley's exposure to buckyballs may have triggered his cancer, as carbon (read the labels on a toner cartridge) is generally accepted as a carcinogen.
Puts Mr Smalley in good company, with Marie Curie and oher Nobels killed by their research.
