I have been in MMF threesomes, as well as FFM, foursomes, and even "small orgies" of about 6 people. The threesomes I didn't care for, as much, but, of course, they were still fun. I just personally prefer even numbers of people when it comes to sex play. Be it two, four, six, or even more! 
If both partners feel a three...(or more)...some is right for them, then it can be a wonderful experience.  It just takes a couple secure in their relationship to get over jealousy issues and the "what if"s.
