Here's how you get an avatar under your name..

If you look where it says USER CP(it's like a silver box)in the upper middle right side of the page you can click on that and it will take you to another page....when you get to the second page click on to EDIT OPTIONS...then read that page and go from there...the instructions are pretty basic...
