Buddy may have seemed a bit player in rock history, based on his sparse chart success, but he did make some waves circa 1968-71. He played with Jimi Hendrix only once (that was recorded anyway), but the "Band of Gypsys" album, recorded live on New Year's Eve of 1969 (if memory serves) captured arguably Hendrix's finest live show ever, & Buddy played a perfect counterpoint to him on "Machine Gun". I still smile at the fact that more people heard his voice as a California Raisin than ever listened to one his records.
