An actor on a long-running Canadian TV show .....among 33 people receiving the Order of Canada on Friday.

Actor Steve Smith, a.k.a. Red Green with Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean after receiving the Order of Canada at Rideau Hall in Ottawa on Friday, Feb. 17.

Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean presented Canada's highest honour to this year's recipients during a morning ceremony at her official residence, Rideau Hall, in Ottawa.

Steve Smith, best known for his handyman character Red Green, is among the new members of the Order of Canada. The Toronto-born actor plays the leader of the Possum Lodge on The Red Green Show.


After working as a steam fitter, car jockey, postman, lab technician, elementary school teacher and musician, Smith left his rock band in 1974 to form the comedy duo Smith and Smith with his wife. ......

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service in various fields. Appointments are made on the recommendation of an advisory council, chaired by the chief justice of Canada.

Recipients can wear the six-pointed snowflake medal or lapel pin, and may add the initials CC (companion), OC (officer), or CM (member) after their names.

I was a little bummed that his tie wasn't made out of duct tape and his medal wasn't duct-taped on!

This wasn't an official lodge meeting. He had to dress down.
