I don't smoke and while I'm certainly not fond of encountering it in a closed in public place, I don't give a rat's ass what you do in your privately owned space. I am shocked with that dude in NJ trying to pass the no smoking while driving thing. It's only responsible for like 1% of the accidents in that state yet this is the battle to fight??????

I read an article on that and was thinking it was a bit overboard. If they are concerned with distractive driving then they might as well ban eating, applying makeup, listening to music, talking on the phone, and talking to passengers in your car as well.

They'll probably try to ban masturbating while driving next... :rolleyes2

Well it may already be banned if you are on a live streaming webcam in your car :p

Grrrrrrrrrr.... I smoke.

I am a polite smoker - I don't smoke in dining areas, I don't smoke in a public place around lots of people, and I also ask those who visit my home if they mind that I smoke while they are there. Usually they look shocked that I ask and don't know what to say. I explain to them - I will not impose my poor choice/addiction onto someone who doesn't partake - even in my own home, so if it bothers you I will either not smoke - or go outside.

This idiot in NJ is wasting his time. Why doesn't he go after those who drink and drive? Have a zero tolerance for those who imbibe? 0.00% alcohol level?

I also wonder, when I hear about thse kinda things if the person isn't trying to distract the public he represents from something much more scandalous... :eek:

I heard this this morning, and I think it's crap... banning smoking in public places is one thing, but banning smoking while driving makes as much sense as banning smoking in your home. There are some places the government should not reach. And if people want to kill themselves slowly while driving, more power to em. :grin:

I think people on cell phones, and those trying to eat/drink and drive are much more of a hazzard than smokers. I know cell phone usage while driving is being legislated, but I don't know how possible it would be, or even practicle or reasonable to try to legislate eatling/drinking while driving.

what about changing radio stations? The one accident I've been involved in (in recent history) was on an interstate during rush hour, because some young gent decided to change the radio station rather than watch traffic.

I wish I had such free time on my hands....

I was going to say. It's more dangerous having me try to get the ghetto crap my kid likes off the radio then me lighting up.

I don't understand this rule. I think there's been talk of legislating against (is that the right phrase? legislating against?) smoking when you're in the car with kids but WTF? You can't smoke in your car when you're driving alone? What is the reasoning?

I'm dating a non-smoker and I use one of my fave lines on him, "I don't mind if you eat while I'm smoking."

Like Chey, I'm a polite smoker but this legislation is 'tarded.

We're going awful far in restricting a legal habit, aren't we?

I have sort of a unique perspective on this. My junior year of high school, a very popular girl in our community was killed in a car accident. The driver (her mother) was lighting a cigarette and dropped the lighter. She figedted around trying to pick it up, lost control and left the road. Mom walked away, but the coroner couldn't even patch Beth up enough for the funeral.

So I can see how smoking in your car is defineatly a hazard. I am also for banning smoking in public places.

That being said, I don't think that the government should have the right to legislate what you do in private. What you do in your home and when no ons is watching is your own business. It's my opinion, though, that your car should be considered "out in public." Mind you, I didn't say public property, just "in public."

I seem to be in the minority on this one, but I disagree with most of what has been said here.

I had a friend in High School that flicked some ash at his ash tray and missed. The ash was still hot enough when it landed on his note book, that it ignited. When he realized what was happening he paniced and tried to put it out without stopping the car. He wrapped his car around a light pole. He was fortunate to survive with only some minor burns on his hands and a bruised sternum when his chest hit the steering wheel.

After saying that, I would rather see legislation against cell phones and drinking/eating than smoling. Of course it might be better to ban idiots from driving. Was behind a lady at a stop light who was on her cell phone, smoking and drinking coffee. She had the phone cradled on her shoulder. For some reason, she missed that the light turned green. When I honked at her, she made a rude gesture like it was my fault.
