Family Vacations
I'm trying to plan a summer vacation and started wondering what kinds of vacations you guys have had.
What was the best vacation you remember as a kid? What is the best vacation you have had as an adult? |

LOL to the beach but I'm sure you've had enough of that. :D

One of my best memories is when we went to North Dakota and rented a cabin near a lake. We were there for 2 weeks and just fished, swam, and hiked. We would go out everyday in the boat and fish - my dad, mom, my sister and me.
One day, just my dad and I went out while my mom and sister went shopping. We talked about a lot of stuff. He talked about when he was a kid and what school was like for him - the pranks he and his brothers pulled on each other and his first girlfriend (wasn't mom). He very seldom talked about his childhood so I listed and felt so honored and very special. Around lunch we floated to a nearby bank, anchored, and ate the sandwiches he had made for us before we left in the morning. Every fish we caught that day we threw back. When we got back to the cabin, my mom and sister were there...they wondered why we weren't very successful.... I remember dad saying that successful fishermen don't necessarily have to bring home a catch - and he winked at me. My dad passed away in 1998....I miss him. |
Thank you! That's the kind of trip I'm looking for.

:D We did have a good time there didn't we :D I want to do something like that again, educational to keep my little smarty pants interested but yet fun to keep me occupied :D

I think one of the most fun my wife and I had was to visit a nudist resort in Michigan for a week. Lots to do ... swimming, boating (small lake), hiking in the nude, a dance in the community center (almost but not quite nude). We rented a cabin there and had an absolutely delightful time.
Best as a family was probably our trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Beautiful, beautiful mountains. Lots of park entertainment. Close to a lot of scenic locations and even the tourist Mecca of Gatlinburg :(. There's a wonderful auto tour route into the Smoky Mountains just outside of Gatlinburg with old cabins and such from the early settling of the area. We had a ball there. Spent a week tent camping and it was fun. |
Lil,
Epcot when I've saved enough up to come over again. |
Lil-
As a kid , if I vacationed, I went with friends camping or to the Pocono mountains. My fathers idea of a vacation was a day trip to Great Adventure. Oh joy! Since I hate rides! As an adult, hubby and I have only been to the shore for a wknd and Conneticut on business , in heavy snow, while I was 8 mos pregnant with a bad UTI- EEEK!!!! So- in exactly 69 days I will be taking my 1st real vacation, my first plane ride, my 1st trip outta the US. A cruise to the Western Carribean. Yippie!!!! |

It's a date! SK~ I took my first vacation with Mr. Lil ever (since our honeymoon) last summer. I hope you have a wonderful time! |
Knowing how you feel about camping and hiking through the mountains...I'll keep those memories to myself. ha ha
Hilton Head is a fun place to unwind, but if you don't play golf...you'll end up driving elsewhere for entertainment and education. Charleston is about an hour away and makes for a great day trip. There's a battleship museum there as well. Washington DC, with it's endless monuments and fabulously educational and interesting Smithsonian...always a great way to spend time. It's very expensive to stay there and to eat, but I guess that's part of what vacation is all about. Pennsylvania Dutch Country in Lancaster, PA is supposed to be great. I've been through there but haven't spent much time poking about. It's also close to Hershey, PA. ;) I imagine that to be a more laid back vacation than DC. I know it's pretty far away, but NYC is convenient for me...I mean interesting for you. :D |
how bout williamsburg, va?it's interesting and educational (it's the worlds largest living historical museum, you know :D ) and you've got busch gardens right next door. fun for the whole fam-dam-ily

Great suggestions! When we sat down to chat about it all Mr. Lil's ideas were landmarks, mine were all beaches, #1 kid's ideas all involved specific statesmainly Texas and CA, and little one's all involved theme parks and their accompanying hotels :D
|
it sounds like it's gonna be hard to make em all happy.
the outer banks might be good, for ya'll...beaches, history and although there are no "theme" parks there are tons of littler parks and go carts, putt-putt, water slides, and lots of outdoorsy stuff, too...kyacks(sp), those parachutes pulled by boats, fishing charters, jet skis...we went once, rented a house for a week...fantastic time. then again...they say the space needle is lovely this time of year :D |
