~ name THAT style ~

Ok here is the deal. I had damage during the last hurricane to 2 pieces of furniture and 1 of my Persian Rugs. The Insurance adjuster said that he could give me $500 for each piece. I researched the rug and online at a Rug shop I could get a smaller one similar style for $1350. I keep trying to research the chest of drawers I have an can't find either.

I need help ....
I need someone who could tell me what style these two pieces are. Perhaps then I can figure out how much they are worth. I figured that if anyone would know it would be my smart and sexy Pixie friends. Keep in mind these 2 pieces were in excellent condition before getting poured on inside my house.

They all appear to be "Horizontal Style". :D

Though the first one has British Colonial characteristics. The squared off feet and wooden drawer pulls look close to this one...

darogle 10-08-2004 12:08 PM

the first one to me looks art deco, especially along the edges and pulls. The second has me a bit stumped as far as style (perhaps william and mary, or american colonial), but I think that one might be worth your while to research further. Take it to get an independant appraisal if need be. Look at the joinery in the drawers and under the drawers themselves. Look for square nails and a natural darkening of the wood as ways of telling you if it is an old piece or a later reproduction. Just from the picture, I'd definitely argue the $500 on that one. I'd also tell him to pound sand on the Persian rugs too. Would be damn hard to find a decent one for $500.

I appreciate all the help. It has me a bit flustered just trying to get info and not settling on the first quote. I am not a big arguer and usually just say ok to anything. Though I need to really get this one figured.

Wild Irish where did you find that picture? The one on the right looks like one of them.

Wyndhy thank you for the link I shall definitely check into that one.

Nikki1979 thanks for trying!

Dargole thanks for the advice and I totally agree about the Persian Rug deal.

No I didn't forget about you PF! I just wanted to prepare you. My panties were ....

... not in either one of those chest of drawers! :p: :slurp:

1940's 50's on the light pine or maple one...I agree with the deco possibility. Reminds me of my Gram's maple bedroom set.

I was also thinking mid-century modern (deco) on the first one. Is there any indications of the manufacturer on them (markings on the back, bottom, or on a drawer). If you can find anything relating to the producer, you could maybe send them the pictures for help.

Ummmmm...the one on the right is from your picture. ha ha I put them side by side to make it easier to compare. :D

So what you're saying is that the one I found looks nothing like yours. Damn!

Let's just say that if it was on a test to "find the different one”,…. I'd circle it.

jay-t 10-08-2004 04:34 PM

The first piece looks art-deco 1940sthe 2nd one looks late 1800s check the drawers to see if the joints are dovetailed (better craftsmanship) or a lap joint I agree with Darogle take it to a dealer and ask questions, to find a makers name look at the back of the draws, the back or on the bottom of the chest, also dont throw it away take and have it repaired depending on the quailty it will sell for about 1/2 of original
