If you can't do the time, don't do the crime!

TOO HOT FOR ARIZONA CONVICTS ???

It's even hotter than usual in Phoenix, 116 degrees, sets a new record,

the Associated Press reports:

About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at

the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their

government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on

their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees
inside, the

week before. Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected

on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzo, an inmate who has

lived in the tents for 1 ½ years. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago

started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not

one bit sympathetic.

He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates:

"It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and

they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths. "

KIND OF PUTS THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE DOESN'T IT?

darogle 06-18-2004 07:06 PM

Sharni 06-18-2004 08:52 PM

*LOL*

dreamgurl 06-18-2004 09:07 PM

For some reason I love that judge.

Irish 06-18-2004 10:34 PM

darogle---Makes sense,doesn't it?I've lived thru both.In one case,
I probably deserved it.As a soldier,I just did as I was told! Irish
P.S.I was a service-man, from 1961-1965,so it was, probably,a
little different, in how you looked at life!

Ranger1930 06-18-2004 10:59 PM

I would love.. to shake that mans hand....

Belial 06-18-2004 11:30 PM

I'm going to go against the grain here. Prison need not be comfortable, but it should be safe, and these temperatures are hardly safe. How many of you will sing the judge's praises if someone dies? Let's keep in mind that this is a county jail, not a Supermax full of serial killers, and anyone fighting in 120 F degree heat in Iraq is there because they chose to be there.

Ranger1930 06-18-2004 11:36 PM

regardless of the crime.. i think they deserve it.. if not for the simple fact that they should know they broke the law.. and well.. were stupid enough to get caught.... But.. the Experience of their prison stay alone in that type of condition alone will be enough to make them not want to get ... caught again...

But.. on your other part.. about our boys in iraq.. well i see that.. but.. still... when you break the law.. you need to be ready for the consequences of which.. and exactly what irish said

If you can't do the time.... don't do the crime..

Belial 06-18-2004 11:58 PM

Sure, do the time, but I don't believe that time should be served in inhumane conditions. Somewhere the line must be drawn to delimit fair punishment and unfair cruelty and I believe putting prisoners in conditions which pose a threat to their health and are avoidable is unfair and cruel. Some people in county jails are there awaiting trial, are they not? A decent proportion of those are not going to be convicted, true?

Sharni 06-19-2004 12:01 AM

They deserve it....i believe all prisons holding convicted prisoners should go back to breaking rocks and chains! Might give criminals good damn incentive not to want to come back for another try

rabbit 06-19-2004 08:22 AM

Amen Irish and Sharni....let 'em sweat. They deserve it.

As for the pink, serves them right.

I don't feel sorry for them in the least. As for the comparison to our troops, those inmates have it BETTER...no one is shooting at them.

I doubt if the Australian Troops, want to be there, but they swore
that they would do as told,& thats what they're doing.I,actually,
know people, that want to go BACK to jail, because it's the only
way,that they think,that they can get cable TV,3 hots & a cot,etc.
My (deceased) father was a Conn. State Cop & a town, aux, cop.I
doubt that he would like to see them treated good,if they raped
his wife,sister,daughter-in-law,grandchildren,etc. But they weren't
serial killers. Irish
