For the Sherlock Holmes fans.

Gentlefolk,

A collection of personal papers belonging to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has been found!

Very interesting jseal.:)
It’s a shame Basil Rathbone isn’t here to read them for us.:(

jseal 03-17-2004 12:51 PM

PantyFanatic,

Yes, it is. For my money, Basil Rathbone is the personification of Sherlock Holmes. I am told that Mr. Rathbone was an accomplished actor independent of this role, but my knowledge is limited to that one.

Catch22 03-17-2004 12:55 PM

Elementary dear Jseals! Basil played mostly English bad guy types in films during the 30s.

As much as I liked Basil Rathbone in many movies,I think Jeremy Brett was the quintessential Sherlock Holmes. Basil was a hell of a sword fighter though.

jseal 03-17-2004 01:37 PM

lakritze,

Jeremy Brett, eh? Fair enough. I have been told that I sould not limit my vision of Mr. Rathbone to his performances of the sleuth of Baker street.

I agree lakritze, I really came to love Jeremy Brett's version in the Holmes stories on PBS .... the only problem was then I saw My Fair Lady and couldn't focus on his performance there from much younger years ... the voice just kept pulling me back to Holmes!!! LOL!

Another Jeremy Brett fan although I still enjoy the old rerun's of SH with Basil Rathbone in them. For the time those were made, they were great! :)

PantyFanatic 03-18-2004 10:25 AM

I always enjoy a new prospective and improvements in things after they have been discovered or invented, but my greatest respect always goes to the original creator. I’ve been lucky enough to pass this prospective down to my kids who now enjoy movies like Gone With The Wind, Maltese Falcon, The French Connection and The Wizard Of Oz. Today’s technology and experience can, and often do, produce things quite different and sometimes even improved. But I still tip my hat to the first to build the stage. :)

You're forgetting Casablanca, PF!

I had a Sherlock Holmes hat and coat when I was a kid, so addicted to his literature was I!

One of my friends is his great-great grandson. Dude's got money and deservedly so! :D

This is greatnews! I can only hope that this information gets out to us and doesn't collect dust for another forty years in some ones private library
( I was always glad that I found Sherlock Holmes in print first
no actor can surpass the imagination)

Wearing a deerstalker instead of your pointed hat won’t fool anybody Steph. Keeping the cape for your night runs is a dead give-away. ;)

Some of my favorite memories of my mother.....are her and I snuggling up on opposite ends of the sofa on a chilly Sunday afternoon and watching Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Holmes and Watson! Oh, how I wanted to be as clever as Sherlock! Mom and I would try and solve things before Sherlock revealed how he knew. Geezzzz, those were fun times!

TY for the smile jseal!
