Starting out in the "Real World"

Ok, this is probably a dumb thread, but...

As many of you may know, I will be graduating from college in about a month. :) While I am just so excited about finally being done with this major accomplishment, I am also feeling some anxiety with my job hunt in this unstable and bleak job market.

I was just wondering if any of you had any experiences to share about your life immediately following graduation from HS/College, and your transition into the "real world." I know I'm sure getting anxious, and would love to hear how people got their start. Any advice would be awesome too! :)

Thanks!

real life is easy. i'm starting over in a new career (currently waiting for my rep to tell me my first assignment) but after numerous chapters (yeah i'm old) getting by with some luxeries is easy. the main things i believe in are a well stocked freezer (take advantage of sales) and banding together with worthwhile friends.

BCG~ Great thread! I have basically never been without a job since I was 15, til going back to school 2 years ago. The idea of job hunting after I am done with college (still 2 years to go) scares the hell out of me. I am sending you vibes of peace and prosperity hoping you find the perfect position!

Yes, BCG, but does it pay?

What is reality anyway, but a perception of what we see when we look at what is around us. This reality could be nothing but the figment of someones imagination, therefore nothing we do matters anyway.....

Oh who am I kidding...we work our asses off, get laid once in a while, smile once in a while, them get our wrinkled selves shoved in the ground...

Oh...good luck BCG :D

The one thing to avoid is getting carried away with "toys" once you have a "real" payckeck... that one bit me in the ass pretty hard. Here I was thinking "woohooo!" I have cash on hand... instead I should have been thinking "make a budget before you screw your self dumb ass"....

This is very understandable BCG! Fear of the unknown is classic. Confidence is the key. I know.....easy for me to say way over here, but confidence shows on our face and in our mannerisms. So even if you don't feel all that confident.......don't let um know it! When it comes to job interviews....walk in tall, shake hands firmly and look um in the eye when you speak. You'll be just fine hun! From what I know of you here, you exude confidence. Early congratulations and go get um! *hugs*

Apply for a zillion jobs and take care with your cover letters. You'll be fine, I bet! Congrats on graduating!!!

I'm presuming that if you knew what you wanted to do with your life in the "real world", you wouldn't be worried - so the same as I was some time ago.

My advice (its easier to learn from others mistakes) expect a whole new world, keep your mind open and try to see the wood for the trees. Don't be afraid to make mistakes - and when you do try to realise it as soon as possible, take remedial action, dust yourself down and move on.

Work hard play hard, be considerate and well mannered but focused. If you want.
