Permanent Human Values!

Reading Catch 22's thread about Iraq brought this speech to mind. It was given by Joseph Cambell in 1940, but I think that it is still very revelent today. For those of you who read it all (it is a bit long) I think you will find it enlighting, I sure did!

What do you think???

I have always purported this man to be pure genius. I wish my mind were 1/10th as sharp as his. His reasoning and associative powers never fail to inspire me to look at things from another vantage.

LixyChick 04-12-2004 04:17 PM

It's a very interesting viewpoint. And more to the point, it seems to span time!

curvyredhead 04-12-2004 11:11 PM

I agree Lixy, it seems as true today as in 1940... besides it is good to open our eyes and think, not just listen and do what we are told, eh?

Catch22 04-12-2004 11:20 PM

Very interesting indeed. the Powers that be will always do what they can to control. That is the good thing about the net. One can talk to anyone, anywhere and not just rely on the point of view of the Power. If I was not able to talk to Americans, I would have only what is shown on TV or in newspapers as to what Americans are said to be like.

curvyredhead 04-12-2004 11:28 PM

Thank goodness you don't have to rely on our media to know what Americans are like, or you would probably want to exile all of us off the planet!! LOL

Catch22 04-12-2004 11:31 PM

Indeed as you have yourself found out curvyredhead Australians are not what they are painted. :)

Catch22 04-12-2004 11:36 PM

Our values have been handed down to us from Empires. Most western world laws and values are hand me downs or spin offs of Roman values of 2,000 years ago.

curvyredhead 04-13-2004 06:01 PM

It is true that Australians are different than I was taught when I served in the Navy. I was told Aussie men were brutes and terrible to women... wow how wrong was that!!!

It's also true that the western world is a product of Roman values (as well as a few other societies- Greek and Celt for example). Isn't it interesting what has remained with us? Some for good and some for the worse!!

jseal 04-13-2004 09:40 PM

Catch22,

There remains much in our world which can be traced to Rome. I would suggest that if you add a measure of Christian philosophy, you’ll integrate even more. And the Net is deliciously democratic isn’t it?

Irish 04-13-2004 10:35 PM

Years ago,I had to go(State mandated)to so many(#)of AA meetings a week. This may not be revelent, but when you think
about it it makes alot of sense!
Rule#?---Shut your mouth & open your ears!
That is very good advice for everyone. Irish
P.S.You'll find that many people have differing opinions,on things!

There is a bit of that rough and tough stuff, but every society has its grunts.

curvyredhead 04-15-2004 04:59 PM

Irish,

It is amazing what you can learn when you open your ears and close your mouth, huh?! There is an old saying (and I'm paraphrasing here...) Give many your ears and few your voice. You don't have to believe everything you hear, but isn't it better to hear and judge for yourself, than to remain ignorant?

Catch 22,

True every society has grunts, and I think the US has more than its share :), but I'm very glad that I didn't just "buy-into" what I was told. I would have missed a wonderful opportunity!! Critical thinking is a skill that everyone should develop, I think...

jseal,

The internet's ability to link different people with different ideas and values is one of its strenghts!! I'm very glad that we can all gather together!

Catch22 04-17-2004 02:16 PM

I hope it all goes well for you.

curvyredhead 04-18-2004 02:44 PM

Thank You Catch22! So far so good!! LOL May is getting closer all the time!
