Double Dog Dare You
If you don't remember this, you're too young anyway. This is a time we can feel good about remembering so much I am sharing this with you today because it ends with a "double dog dare" to pass it on. Always remember that the perfect age is somewhere between old enough to know better and young enough not to care. How many do you remember? 1. Candy cigarettes. 2. Wax coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water inside. 3. Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles. 4. Coffee shops with tableside juke boxes. 5. Blackjack, Clove and Teaberry chewing gum. 6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles, with cardboard stoppers. 7. Party lines. 8. Newsreels before the movie. 9. P. F. Flyers. 10. Butch wax. 11. Telephone numbers with a word prefix, (Drexel-5505). 12. Peashooters. 13. Howdy. 14. 45-RPM Records. 15. Green Stamps. 16. Hi-fi's. 17. Metal ice cube trays-with levers. 18. Mimeograph paper. 19. Blue flash Bulbs. 20. Beanie and Cecil. 21. Roller skate keys. 22. Cork pop guns. 23. Drive ins. 24. Studebakers. 25. Wash tub wringers. 26. The Fuller Brush man. 27. Reel-to-reel tape recorders. 28. Tinkertoys. 29. The Erector Set. 30. The Fort Apache Playset. 31. Lincoln Logs. 32. 15 cent McDonald hamburgers. 33. 5 cent packs of baseball cards...with that awful pink slab of bubblegum. 34. Penny candy. 35. 10 cent-a-gallon gasoline. AND A TIME WHEN .................... Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo." Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "Do over!" "Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Catching the fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening. It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends. The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties. Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a slingshot. A foot of snow was a dream come true. Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute ads for action figures. "Oly-oly-oxen-free" made perfect sense. Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles. The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team. War was a card game. Water balloons were the ultimate weapon. Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle. Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin. If you can remember most or all of these, then you have lived!!!! Pass this on to anyone who may need a break from their "grown up life...." I double dog dare ya! |
5. Blackjack, Clove and Teaberry chewing gum.
YUMMY!!!!!:p:p Sometimes you can still find these....Teaberry my fav:p TY Scotz I am old too:D:D:D |
Here in Europe we have had different things, but I think we´re around the same age then. I found a book that was a collection of online posts of people being born in the same year 68. Lots of great rememberings. Somehow a good time.
|
I'm 28 and remember nine of those . . . reel-to-reel tape because I was in journalism school and they made you learn editing on one in case the digital system crashed, though!
|
Steph gotcha beat, I'm 18 and have seen and experianced 10 of em..... heheheh
|
Scotz---I remember everything except the Fort Apache playset!
I don't remember gas for less than $.15per gal. Also;a slingshot in school was a jackknife.(multi-blade)Does that make me old? When I was in school;if you smoked a joint;you were a drug addict!Only ;a few;kids;drank alcohol.I was mad when gas went to $.25 a gal. ;because it came out of my grass cutting profits. Irish |
well a lot of those things we never had in Australia but there are 12 on the list I remember
How about No TV Black and white TV Pounds shillings and pence as currency the beatles, elvis presley, rolling stones bringing out new songs all day suckers long sideburns flared trousers for men pointy toed shoes brylcream to plaster down your hair or even worse, Californian poppy, a raspberry coloured liquid that did the same thing the mess it used to make on the pillow cases. two shillings (20 cents) was a lot of money for a kid yo yo's Annette Funiccello in the Mickey mouse club - I think she gave me my first erection :) i think she would be well into her 50's now. |
What are you talking about?
“P. F. Flyers” that had nothing to do with me.
or 1. City zone numbers instead of zip codes. 2. Drug stores that didn’t sell car part but had soda fountains. 3. Davey Crockett caps with the real imitation raccoon tail. 4. 78 rpm records that broke when you looked at them wrong. 5. Air Raid drills at school. 6. Eagle Stamps were the Green ones and S&H were yellow. 7. Before Hi-Fi, you always had a little envelope with record player needles that you changed about every 20 plays. 8. Captain Video 9. Carbon paper and Fountain Pens. 10. Hudson and Rambler 11. The milk mans truck that you stole the ice with the hole in it from. 12. Radio shows like Fibber McGee & Molly, Sargent Perston & King, Tarzan and Gildersleve. 13. Movie series like Charlie Chan and Sherlock Holmes. 14. Wax teeth, lips and mustache, Candy dots on the paper strip and Penny pretzels that cost a penny. 15. Lead soldiers you made and painted. Nop! Don’t remember any of that. I just read a lot. |
Grumbleguts---You bring back;forgotten;memories.You mentioned
Brylcream.I remember;getting out of bed one morning(I was in the Armed Forces)I was still 1/2 drunk and was almost late for role call!I staggered over to the sink, grabbed my toothpaste;and started to brush my teeth.I almost puked. In my haste;I had grabbed;a tube of Brylcream;instead of toothpaste.I didn't even look.I never used anything on my hair. The haircream was a Christmas Present.Always the cheapskate;I put it in my medicine cabinet;instead of throwing it away.Don't try it!It doesn't taste good.I had forgotten that;it was a long time ago. Diva---How did you get that picture of me? Irish
|
I can remember 27 of these things Scotz.
|
Are milkman had a horse drawen cart and the horse knew the next stop and all the kids who had sugar for it. I hate to admit it but I can remeber all of it but for the 10cent gas. Used to own a Nash Rambler.
|
I read about this too.
Diva, is it true that the only milk route east of the Canadian Rockies now is your street?
(if you want them to deliver every day, you have to keep that drive shoveled.);) |
Irish I loved the brylcream memories
The supermarkets have just about killed the milko :( Sometimes progress isnt all that good |
How many do you remember? Well I may be younger than some but
1. Candy cigarettes. ahh espcially the ones that were really powdered so you could blow smoke still available but now are called sticks 2. Wax coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water inside. - Nicklnips and they are still out too only nw they cost like $0.50 for 4 or 5 of them 3. Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles. They had one at my fave rollerink which still has wooden floors btw glass always got the pop colder than plastic 4. Coffee shops with tableside juke boxes. They still have some in a couple resturants out her although more are becoming broken and unfixable 5. Blackjack, Clove and Teaberry chewing gum. my fave is teaberry!! and they still bring it out every 3 to 5 years 6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles, with cardboard stoppers. You can actually still get milk from a dairy out here in glass bottles 13. Howdy. alright i may be too young for the original airing but I was in the peanut gallery for the reruns 14. 45-RPM Records. - I still have a ton of them now I just need a new record player.... has anyone noticed how much they cost now???????? 17. Metal ice cube trays-with levers. - lol my Grandma still uses them and still calls the refrigerator a Frigidaire 21. Roller skate keys. wow don't they still have those? lol must be too long since I was on skates 23. Drive ins. damn I miss those you can hardly even tell where the old ones were now anybody else see The Littlest Whorehouse in Texas on bigscreen OMG talk about big boobs lmao 24. Studebakers. - only the restored ones 28. Tinkertoys. they are still around only cost too much now 29. The Erector Set. we used to build amazing things with my brothers set they weren't for girls ya know lol 31. Lincoln Logs. forts for the gi joes 34. Penny candy. nothing better than getting a dime from your grandma and running up to the corner store to gorge on penny candy :) Well I think at 16 is not too bad :D |
Had some doubts as to how this would be received...certainly didn't expect to stir up so many memories...or that so many "kids" would jump in on this... ;)
|
Vampeyes---Did you know that Howdy had a twin brother named
Double. My skates always fell off!Even at a young age;I thought in a mechanical way.In my mind;if you turned the key;you loosened ;the tension;on the wheels;and the skates went faster! Irish |
Damn Scotz, I remember 28 of these things... I'm not including the reel to reel because I never used one, I just knew about them. Me and my cousin were always carting around a little cassette tape recorder and making up stories and fake radio programs on it. I also know what a Studebaker is, but they are certainly before my time. I only included things that I had or used or was very familiar with.
Oh, and I have a big scar from being double dog dared as a teen... |
Aquaman43---One of the cars; that my wifes father had; when I was dating her;was a Studebaker stationwagon.Yes;they had cars in those days;not just horsedrawn buggies! Irish
|
I have fond memories of some of those things because my grandmother was a pack rat. Any of the ladies remember the real china tea sets for the little girls. Still have mine that was passed down since like 1875 or something like that.
|
I remember 28 of those..Does this mean WE are all OLD Timers??
|
Quote:
I do know Howdy had a female cousin named Heidi..... |
DAMN Scotz!!!! I really didn't need to feel any older than I already do!! I'm already the oldest woman on the site.......hell, if it weren't for Irish, I'd be the oldest.......PERSON!! ROFL :D:D So far the only person who remembers more than I do is Scarecrow.
I can remember everything but two things. The Fort Apache play set, but I guess, considering I'm a girl and had no brothers I can be excused on that one. And I don't remember gas ever being that cheap. The cheapest I can recall was during one of Detroit's famous gasoline price wars in the '60s sometime and it was 13.9 cents per gallon. Since the car we had was a clunker, my mother used to use "bulk oil" for it...10 cents a quart. Came in glass bottles with tops like funnels. It was oil that was drained from other cars when the garage would do an oil change. Oh hell, how about when you went to the "Service Station" and actually got service??? They'd pump the gas for you, ask if you wanted your oil and water checked, and wash your windshield...all when gas was below .35 per gallon!!! How about carry out coffe in returnable glass bottles with paper plug/caps?? Cars that didn't come with turn signals...and still had "choke" knobs you had to adjust just right or the car wouldn't start?? OH HELL.....I'm feeling too damn old here...I'm gonna go find a cave to crawl in and wallow in some self pity. Any other "old folks" care to join me? |
Sugarsprinkles---My old girlfriend;had an old Plymouth(58-59?)that used more oil than gas.We used to put that"bulk oil"in it;
when we stopped for oil&sometimes gas.I totalled that car when I was driving;and she was sitting in my lap;and playing with my dick Irish P.S.(mission almost impossible)Getting your dick back in your pants;before the cops get there! |
Irish....
We had a '57 Ford Fairlane...every time we got in it was $2.00 of gas and 2 qts. of oil.... And I never did anything quite so.......ahhhh...Interesting in it as you...............:D :D :D |
Sprinkles, I have a manual choke on my Mitsubishi van.
Automatic chokes are trouble in the tropics. I remember 14, and a lot of the ones I don't are culturally North American, not Aussie. I'll PM GG with a better list of Aussie. "Brylcream, a little dob'll do you. Then you'll find, the girls'll all pursue you." Jingle time. |
Well Scotz I can remember them all!! So I guess I am up there in age with Irish and Sugarsprinkles!! LOL How about these?
- Horse drawn carriage that brought you blocks of ice. - Ice box was your refrigerator. - Horse drawn carriage that brought you your milk. - Horse drawn carriage that brought you your bread. OK, that is enough! Now I am not old - only 58, however can remember a lot of "fun" things from the late 40's and earlier 50's. Thanks for the memories!! |
David---I'm 58 also.Now;we'll have to find out;the age;of Old Fart!
His profile says;June 16 but doesn't give the year.I always got the impression;that he was right up there;but some people(my wife&females in general)are very sensitive;on that subject.I hate stereotypes;but;most men don't seem to give a shit! Irish |
Sugarsprinkles---Know what she got after the Plymouth?A '57
Ford Fairlane;with a 312cu. engine.I was 17.I enlisted in the armed forces before court. Irish P.S.Make that a 4? Plymouth! |
Do you remeber having to use coal to heat with or cook with??? Pumping water from a well by hand or god forbid the Outhouse?
|
Quote:
I don't but my husband does...but he lived in a more rural area than I. And he's only 2 yrs older than I..he's 55. |
Quote:
about anything...not just age....:D :D :D Sorry, couldn't resist.....:p |
Quote:
No, they didn't sell car parts, but they did have a machine where you could test your radio tubes and buy new ones from the bin in the bottom. |
Quote:
Yes...we had to heat with coal and coke.....had to buy a mix. Coal was harder to start but lasted longer and Coke started faster but burned down quickly. Remember using the ashes on your icy sidewalks? Or having to sift out the "clinkers"?... Neighbor had a water pump...I remember playing with it when I was 2 or 3... Also remember the TV/radio tube testing machine... Wish I could find one today..I have a 1938 Philco floor shortwave radio...it still turns on...but needs new tubes... |
Scotz: What a wonderfull Idea!
Got all the ones you listed, and here's afew more: Burmashave road signs. Mail Pouch tobacco signs on Barns Reeds roll candy Heathkit build it yourself B&W TV (my first tv) The Horse-Drawn Veggie cart. WIRE recorders ca WWII. Fizzies Tablets Speedy Alkaseltzer "Call for Phillip Morris" RKO Double Feature Matinees The Perils of Pauline and for those of you who are interested, I now OWN one of those tube testers that used to be in all the drug stores....and one final oldie but goodie: Anyone remember when Radio Shack was truly an electronic parts store and not an electronic toy store? |
Murphy---I grew up in New England!When;Iwas a child;almost
every weekend;my folks;and I;would pack a lunch;and take"day trips."We always packed a lunch;and ate at roadside rest areas; because we had no money to eat out.In those days;you couldn't go anywhere;without seeing those"Burmashave" advertisement; signs.I appreciate now;that altho;my folks;had no money;we still did things as a family ;all of the time. When resistors were the size of your little finger at best and they had all the “fire bottles” before that funny thing with the “3” wires. OLSEN was the biggest competition to them. Nop! Don't remember that either.:o |
The Alamorosa Truck Stop, between Tularosa and Alamogordo, New Mexico is a
4. Coffee shop with tableside juke boxes. And they still work! Lotta old classic C&W. |
