Enough Already!!!

Some times it's not fun trying to be Pixie Village Idiot and at the top of a lot of notification lists too. :banghead:

:hair:1
My last chat with TeddyBear had her still in the hospital on a drip while trying to recover from another MAJOR surgery. She was improving along a trail too often traveled and in good spirits (as only this loooooong suffering lady is capable of) and hoping to return home within the next few days.

:hair:2
I was tensely waiting for a call from a hospital and got one, but from a different hospital in Peoria Illinois. Our DicksBro wants you to know he was hospitalized this afternoon with a "dangerously low blood count" after a scheduled exam. Word is he will be under observation while they explore for the cause and will not be posting until further notice.

:hair:3
We sometimes get something we don't want, .................. like a call from the people your son works for. I got one this afternoon and wasn't happy to be talking to the police department. You can read as much as I can here. The last message was that he was taken to a hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center and is in surgery with broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a punctured diaphragm.

It's going to be a long night. :rolleyes2

jseal 04-21-2009 07:12 PM

PantyFanatic,

Thank you, thank you, and I hope both of you make it through the night. :wish:

Good luck,

John

Lilith 04-21-2009 07:15 PM

I hope they find out what is causing DB problems. I hope your son will be ok. ((hugs)) There goes my agida :p

Oldfart 04-21-2009 08:13 PM

I hope DB gets well soon.

The car's a real mess, PF, he's lucky it's not a lot worse. How's the dog?

((((TeddyBear)))).

FlirtWithMe 04-21-2009 08:13 PM

Oh PF what a night :(

I hope dicksbro's problem is found and fixed very soon. Please pass on my best wishes to him, he is in my thoughts.

The call about your son is one that every parent dreads. I will keep him (and you) in my thoughts and hope that he makes a full and speedy recovery.

PantyFanatic 04-21-2009 10:31 PM

Erok was not with him.

Last update I have is my son now out of surgery and in ICU on a respirator for tonight. The punctured diaphragm was repaired and the broken ribs repositioned to allow the collapsed lung to recover. He has a lacerated spleen and kidney, broken tailbone and hip. They said his spine and brain show no signs of injury. He is in serious but stable condition. I don't expect (nor hope for) any further change or update until mid morning when they have evaluated and come back with a report.

scotzoidman 04-21-2009 10:33 PM

Not to minimize my concern for teddy & db, but words fail me in expressing real concern about your son. Too many best wishes for all would still not be enough.

Coaster 04-22-2009 12:09 AM

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you! What a day!

PF, thanks for keeping us abreast (or 2) of our pixie family members as well as your son.

Oh what the hell.......... come here............... ((((((((((PF))))))))))))))

rockintime 04-22-2009 01:08 AM

PF...wishing the best for your son and a rapid and complete recovery.

DB...get better real soon!

Teddy...hugggs

I concur...ENUF ALREADY!

jbh3 04-22-2009 06:00 AM

Prayers sent in your general direction.

Godspeed...DB....PF jr and all of their families :)

FlirtWithMe 04-22-2009 06:14 AM

PF thanks for the latest update, the injuries sound horrific :( I'm glad it's good news about his spine and brain, that's one less thing to worry about. Keeping everything crossed for good news following the evaluation later.

I can't imagine you've had much sleep, PF, if any, but try to get some if you can

gekkogecko 04-22-2009 09:47 AM

Well, that very well sucking fucks.

dm383 04-22-2009 12:45 PM

What GG said.

PF, I have to say, I think even more of you for taking the time to post these notices about Teddy and DB when you must be concerned about your son.

All of you are in my thoughts, so GET WELL SOON!!

(((PF)))

Irezumi Kiss 04-22-2009 01:46 PM

PF, my most fervent well wishes goes out to your son. I'm happy it wasn't worse than this. And my well wishing goes out to the rest of the Pixies family who are in the hospital as well.

PantyFanatic 04-22-2009 01:54 PM

My son has been taken off the respirator and is breathing on his own with some difficulty and a lot of pain but he seems to have passed the life threatening points. He is still considered 'serious but stable' and they hope to move him to a 'step down unit' by tomorrow. Just breathing is a task so talking is not a consideration right now. He shows the stress when writing a couple short notes for the medical people so isn't up to conversation.

There is going to be a LOT of healing and we'll see when and where that takes us. For now I'm just one VERY grateful father that I still have my son.

It's been a very long 23 hours.

Scarecrow 04-22-2009 02:02 PM

PF, glad to hear that your son is on the road to recovery. With broken ribs and a punctured diaphragm he will probable have trouble breathing for awhile. Hope his recovery is swift and he gets back to normal as soon as possible. You take care of yourself.

That brought tears to my eyes :boohoo:

I am glad your son is off the respirator, that's a good thing, and I wish him as comfortable a time as possible during these long weeks (months?) of recovery. You and your family are in my thoughts, PF. If you need anything just holler, and as Scarecrow said, you take care of yourself

Lilith 04-22-2009 02:41 PM

I told the Lost Kids today about a friend of mine and what happened to his brave police officer son. They send good vibes. Many of them want to be a cop until they find out the difference in pay between public service and drug dealing.

Aqua 04-22-2009 02:50 PM

(((PF))))
I know you'll be doing everything possible to support your son.

We'll be here to support you.

:console:

wyndhy 04-22-2009 08:09 PM

that's awful news (((pf))) my best wishes to your son and some extra good thoughts and determination for his tough (but certain) road to recovery. and a kiss :x: :)

DB-get well soon bro':)

i second the "enough already". i've been getting more than the usual run of bad news about friends and family over the last few weeks, too. and worse bad news than the usual run of just plain bad news. and many of the people i know have been told worse than usual news in recent weeks. it's almost weird, like there's been a shift. sounds like a King plot but still, i wonder if the turtle moved or something. sometimes it seems like even the law of averages is out to get you and yours.

Lilith 04-23-2009 07:34 PM

Update soon please???!???

PantyFanatic 04-23-2009 10:28 PM

Teddy is home and doing well from both the leg infection and the prior brain surgery. We are all happy to hear they smashed the infection ..........(again)......... in quick order this time. Now they are looking for a good electrician to make the connections now that she has everything packed in and the zippers are staying shut.

DB also called to ask about my son and said he expects to be going for some out-patient surgery in the next few weeks. He expects to be home in the next couple days and will post detail then.

The news for my son is coming slow now (or seems to be that way) as everything is "stable". They are considering possibly moving him from IC to a step-down unit if all conditions continue to improve as expected. He's a cop with more drugs in him than the junkies he normally deals with but not enjoying it at all. The sore and pain are very real and are going to be for a while at the least. I will find out tomorrow when the next key evaluation or tests or whatever are going to be done on the various injuries.

It doesn't seem like this has only been two days. :wobbly:

dicksbro 04-24-2009 12:38 PM

Just got home from the hospital. In the course of doing the tests, what they found was a tumor on my colan. Good news is that there are stong indications that it's a recent development and probably hasn't spread. I'll see my surgeon on this coming Wednesday and will probably be back in surgery in the next week or two. Thank God they at least found what the problem was. It was only by chance that I let my cardiologist know about my shortness of breath causing the tests to be done in the first place.

Any good thoughts are appreciated and Mrs. and I are still planning on PAGAN 09 and a nephew's wedding this weekend in Chicago. We're in good spirits and very optimistic.

Want very much to thank PF for briefing you guys on what happened and his son continues in our daily prayers. PF, you're a good friend ... thank you.

:) DB :)

FlirtWithMe 04-24-2009 03:14 PM

PF, thank you for the latest update, I'm glad Teddy's infection was zapped. It sounds like it will be a long, hard, painful slog for your son to be fit again and all we can do is keep him and you in our thoughts :console:

Dicksbro, great to see you back posting and thank you for your update. I wish you all the best for a positive meeting with your surgeon and good results from the subsequent surgery. You're in my thoughts, and you're missed when you're not here

:)

Aqua 04-24-2009 03:18 PM

((((db)))) I'm praying that nothing has spread and you'll be in and out of surgery quickly and safely with a speedy recovery.

dicksbro 04-24-2009 03:32 PM

Thank you FWM and Aqua. You're good thoughts and prayers are truly appreciated. It'll go good!

dm383 04-24-2009 04:35 PM

Good to see you out & about DB.

NOw, you be sure and (mis)behave y'self now, y'hear?!?!

dicksbro 04-24-2009 06:48 PM

^^^^ You betcha! :) Thanks, DM!

You have my sympathies...coupla yrs back, I had just a few moments when I believed my son's life might be in the balance, turned out to be nothing more than an anxiety attack...but that relief did not mitigate the grey hairs I acquired in the interim, & the few minutes of doubt felt like hours, & prob took as much off of my lifespan. Hang in there, the highly imperfect human body is never so miraculous as when it pulls itself back together after a disaster.

PantyFanatic 04-25-2009 03:51 AM

Thank you Scotz, and all the good wishes from Aqua to Zoid. Times like these are when Pixies provides a place to sort your thoughts. There has been a time warp without a doubt and my son's gravity is what bent time. The past three days that has been a month at least, has actually been full of miracles. The blunt reminder of how fragile we really are has also demonstrated our ability to survive, salvage and repair. Still the model for every innovation we think we are developing. Early this morning he was moved to the step-down unit, his cathedra was taken out and by this afternoon therapy showed up and had him move to the edge of the bed and get upright on one leg, and back down. This was astonishing after sitting up was impossible 36 hours earlier. He is able to talk (softly) and hold a thought outside of himself and the pain.

A lesson for myself has been that their are things we just can not prepare for. I am aware of the profession he is in but that's not enough even after you tell yourself you have considered the reality. I found this similar to the passing of my mother a year and a half ago. It was a very natural and understood matter for a failing 87 year old woman and you know you are going to get that call someday. When it comes you will be sad but ready.

You are never ready!

PantyFanatic 04-25-2009 05:24 AM

Even though my schedule is mine right now, sleep seems to have it's own schedule as well. I've been able to reflect on a wide range of things and one is how some things actually work. Throughout this ordeal I have been impressed with the quick and correct preparation and response from the groups in the profession.

I know it's part of their business, but a hour and a half after the first report, a representative from the FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) was at the house with an envelope for expenses, telling the family to get down to Columbus. Before the two hours it took to get there, they had two motel rooms logistically to the hospital, set up and paid for the next three nights.

Erok is going to be totally confused for a while. My son belongs to a K9 group from different area units that meets every two weeks and work out the dogs with different scenarios to keep them all at peek on things they don't get to do every day on the job but have to be ready with. Before the family could get ready to leave, a member of the group was there to take Erok that night, and a different handler (so he doesn't get accustomed to any one person) will feed and 'walk' and 'play' with him every day.

The moral support from every aspect of the local first responders is overwhelming. In this case there were two 'local' areas. Men from his department were down to Columbus and stood watch while he was in surgery. Next day, a number of the Columbus Departments, including the Fire and EMS that had been on the scene visited.

It's refreshing to see part of a bureaucracy do what's needed in a timely manner. Perhaps it's because it is set up and executed from the bottom up rather than the top down, but it woks. I guess it comes with the profession but I better understand the 'brotherhood' aspect. It's like the shared experience with an 'Army buddy'.

dicksbro 04-25-2009 05:50 AM

Thank you, PF, for helping to keep us informed. Our hearts go out to your son and to you and all your family and you all will continue in our prayers until we know your son has healed. God bless you!

gekkogecko 04-25-2009 10:14 AM

Yeah, this whole thing is kind of freaky. Not in a good way, either.

jay-t 04-26-2009 09:42 PM

This is my busy time of year and get a free min. and find all kinds of bad news!

DB glad to hear they found the turmor early and things are looking up!

PF sorry to hear about your son and hope hes doing a little better now and you've got some sleep.

PF -- I am so sorry to hear about your son, but glad to know that he is recovering relatively rapidly. I will keep him in my thoughts. I am glad he's so much better.

DB - I am glad to hear they caught your condition early. I fully expect you to be at PAGAN and ready to celebrate!

As you might guess, I've been preoccupied for a few days to where I actually had to stop and figure out what day of the week it was yesterday, and a few hours later had to do it again. I again thank everyone for the thoughts and prayers. I've talked to so many people and time is playing tricks. Sequence of events and 'progress' is the only indelible marks being made on me right now. I had to go back and read this thread to see where we were. This was too close, ..... at least for MY son.

I'm pleased that in spit of the depth, we think we have found the bottom and it's up hill from here. I came back to Cleveland Saturday night and slept for twice the time that is actually my normal nights rest, so I must feel things are under control. He was moved to a regular room today and taken off the oxygen. I understand they had to put him back on for a while and he will sleep with it, but they are very pleased overall.

He will show the zipper they gave him but says the chest drain is his biggest discomfort. He is still on a lot of pain suppressers and will nod off in the middle of a sentence......... then come right back in a couple minutes. Now that the weekend is over he should get some of the rest he needs. That seems to be what is most needed now. :wish:
