Mike Vick...

I think dog fighting is sick Hunting with a dog is a work animal fighting them is just torture opinions ?

Lilith 07-26-2007 08:23 PM

I think raising anything to fight is cruel.

IowaMan 07-26-2007 08:27 PM

One of my first memories is of cuddling up next to our German shepherd when I was toddler. I've loved dogs basically all of my life and the thought of pitting them against each other as some sort of "sport" just sickens me.

Today I heard someone saying that Mr. Vick was just showing his love for the animals by letting them show how strong they are..........

I'd better stop before I go off on a rant.

Jude30 07-26-2007 08:38 PM

I was hoping this was going to a complete the sentence thread you start with "Mike Vick" and I end the sentence with "should die in a fire."

wrestlemark 07-27-2007 10:42 AM

i think...............

......................killing anything cuz it can't fight is wrong he is a cold hard killer and a big scumbag that a lot of kids looked up to  :frown:

Never heard of Mike Vick, but I don't believe in blood sports of any kind, animal or human.

Got this pic of Mr Vick from a friend this morning.

Dog fighting/cock fighting/bear and badger fighting/bull fighting are all relics of a more savage past, but sadly probably also a more savage future.

Still no excuse.

God, I hope that's not true. I assumed it was for the love of the dollar (and pathetic bragging rights).

jseal 08-20-2007 05:44 PM

Michael Vick's lawer has announced that Mr. Vick will plead guilty to dog-fighting charges.

IowaMan 08-20-2007 05:47 PM

Yep, I hope he enjoys playing pickup games in the big house because he won't see an NFL field again for quite some time, if ever.

Oldfart 08-20-2007 06:05 PM

Issue him with two gallons of liquid soap?

IowaMan 08-27-2007 10:19 AM

Now ESPN is doing their best to make it a racial issue. :banghead:

IowaMan,

Look on the bright side, they could have turned it into a species issue. :)

Wow... did anyone see that Whoopi Goldberg spoke in defense of Vick today?

Quote:
Goldberg said that “from where he comes from” in the South, dogfighting isn’t that unusual.

“It’s like cockfighting in Puerto Rico,” she said. “There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of the country.”

The Atlanta Falcons quarterback pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges last week, admitting that he provided money for a dogfighting ring that operated on his Virginia property and helped kill six or eight pit bulls. Vick grew up in Newport News, Va.

Goldberg was selected by series creator Barbara Walters to replace O’Donnell, whose stormy tenure on the ABC program lasted less than a year.

In the Vick discussion, Goldberg served notice that she won’t shy away from controversy.

Co-host Joy Behar looked horrified at Goldberg.

“How about dog torture and dog murdering?” Behar asked.

For many people, dogs are sport, Goldberg replied, and it appeared it took a while for Vick to realize that he was up against serious charges.

“I just thought it was interesting, because it seemed like a light went off in his head when he realized this was something that the entire country didn’t appreciate,” she said.

IowaMan 09-04-2007 05:49 PM

Yep, saw that a bit earlier. WTF????

I guess she's wanting to have PETA gatherings in front of her home huh?

Lilith 09-04-2007 05:50 PM

She is correct that dog fighting is sport in the south. I have always lived in places where there are known dog fights. My Lost Boys used to look up dogs online for their Fun Friday.

The Unites States is a big country, with many different, and often conflicting, norms.

Steph 09-05-2007 10:11 AM

Whoopi just covered her butt/apologized, etc.

I saw it yesterday and I wasn't offended by what she was saying. She wasn't saying dog fighting was acceptable but that it is more common in the South.

lakritze 09-06-2007 08:22 PM

Dogs should never have to endure anything more stressfull than chasing after a frisbee in a tree lined park.

citrus 09-06-2007 11:50 PM

Raising dogs for fighting is wrong. If the dog raised for fighting never sees a fight, was it wrong to raise that dog to fight? The dogfighting is what's wrong. The people who raise the dogs for fighting need to be bitten by the winning dogs.

Oldfart 09-07-2007 01:53 AM

"There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of the country" isn't a defence. It is an indictment.

wyndhy 09-07-2007 10:58 AM

so is this more of the homogenization of a new world culture, then? is cock fighting just as bad or not? should all dogs be only pets who run in the park and catch frisbees? should inuit’s not be allowed to use sled dogs? farmers give up sheep dogs? should cultures give up their traditions because others think it’s brutal or bloodthirsty?

scotzoidman 09-07-2007 11:15 AM

Yes, the genetic make up of some breeds is so intense that not using them for the work that they were bred for is cruel, & they need more stimulation than just chasing a frisbee...

Doesn't change the fact that breeding them just to kill or be killed is wrong & primative. I don't think Whoopi was really defending Vick against the charges, so much as pointing out that he does seem to have had an epiphany of sorts. His statement accepting the blame may be just a PR gambit, but it has raised in my mind the possibility that whether or not he plays football again, there may be hope for him as a human being in the end.
