Crikey! Steve Irwin Killed by Stingray
David Williams
September 4, 2006 - 3:35PM Television personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin has died after being stung by a stingray while filming off north Queensland. Known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter, the 44-year-old was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!''. The Queensland Police Service issued a statement saying Mr Irwin collapsed after being stung at Batt Reef, Low Isles off Port Douglas about 11am. He had been filming a documentary. I always thought a croc'd get him.
Crikey!! |
wow - a shocker...
|
Very sad....now his kids will have to grow up without him.
|
He was unique. Sad that it may have been too much for his own good.
|
His kids'll grow up with an Icon, not a father.
|
Gentlefolk,
He died doing what he loved. Not a bad ending for a naturalist. R.I.P. sir. |
It is sad. How many times I watched him and worried for him. But, like jseal said, he at least left this world doing what he loved best.
God bless you Steve Irwin and rest in peace. |
That is really sad.
|
my son is really really having a hard time with Steve's death.
I liked Irwin for the most part, and as I told my son, he died doing what he loved doing best. He died happy. He was a teacher as well, as he tought people all over how to care and like for animals that normally aren't liked. I hope that I have a little bit of the excitement that he had for when I become a Biology teacher. |
I think a lot of children will have a hard time with his death. He was an adventurous tv hero to many children who are stuck inside with nothing but cartoons and video games to be inspired by.
|
Yeah, I read the news this morning, was seriously wondering if it was a hoax. But couldn't find any indication that the story wa anythign but genuine.
Kind of sucks. |
I can't get over this!!!!
Poor guy. |
It is going to be a loss to the animal and environmental communities I am sure, but at the same time, how many of us will be able to say that we went out doing what we loved??
I'm fairly sure that I won't be in that catagory. RIP Steve, and thanks for all the lessons. |
Last news story said the sting ray peirced his heart and that is what killed him.
R.I.P. Steve |
With much respect of the mentioned work he did to educate and rectify attitudes toward the environment we are part of, he chose to live on the edge with even his children being involved with a publicity backlash. Perhaps his last lesson to us all is to learn how sharp the edge is and enough visits WILL cut, regardless who we are. :(

Wow, his poor kids.......too bad.
|
Sorry to see him go, he was an interesting man. I feel horrible for his kids and wife
|
sad news RIP Steve
|
I agree...in a world filled with cartoons and video games, he was someone that "told" children to go outside and experience nature. Don't just walk around, pay attention, because nature is everywhere and it's interesting.
I was, and am, saddened by his death. For his children, and for everyone's. |
At the end of my day one of my gems who is not stable enough to be at parent pick up turned on the Discover channel and there was Irwin swimming. My student says, "I knew he wasn't dead. I told you he would never just die like that." I had a hard time explaining reruns.

we will all miss steve greatly. he is an icon who is leaving behind a wonderful legacy. we feel so muxh for his wife and kids. he really was a true life super hero.
|
I'm very sorry to hear of his passing. As his friend said, he died doing what he loved... yet it is so sad that he is gone so soon.
Rest in peace Mr. Irwin. |
R.I.P. Steve. We'll miss you.

In a bizarre echo, a man in Florida was stabbed by a stingray.
The barb went thru his heart but he survived because it wasn't pulled out. CNN have the story. |

I heard that this morning. |
Adds a whole new meaning to the "Barbisms" thread.
|
Also heard this today. It was reported (no reference source to confirm) that the darn thing "jumped into the boat" and nailed the guy. :yikes:
(Have the critters decided it's time? ;) ) |

Also on Fox and MSNBC.
