So much for Lilith your phone sex operator

Day 14 and I've already lost my voice. Coughing just strips my vocal chords. Any suggestions or remedies I can try? After tomorrow I have a 3 day weekend to recuperate.

Aqua 09-01-2005 05:17 PM

You need something warm, salty, and slippery in your throat. ;)

Gargle with warm salt water. :D

lonelyarmywife 09-01-2005 05:19 PM

NOT lemons.

The acids in lemons only numb your vocal chords, making it hurt less, but when the numbing wears off you have to deal with the damage you did while you couldn't feel anything.

Vocal rest is probably the only thing that will really cure you. Hot tea may relax the muscles in your throat and make you feel better, but only vocal rest will get you back to where you want to be.

In the future, there are certain things you can do to project your voice. Do not try to talk over your classes, wait for them to be quiet for you (also a good classroom management technique). When you ahve to project your voice, do it from your stomach not not your chest or throat. And drink water, lots of it, all day. With a citrus fruit in it - but not lemons.

hope this helps. It's good to have another teacher around. How is it going besides this?

I read somewhere the other day zinc supplements help take the punch out of cold symptoms. Might not hurt to check that out. ((((((Lil)))) Fell mo' betta soon!

Aqua 09-01-2005 05:28 PM

Oh, and Lil... you can still breath heavy, right? :telephone

BIBI 09-01-2005 05:59 PM

STFU;)..... and get some honey into your throat.... and I don't mean a man LMAO

Lilith 09-01-2005 06:10 PM

Mr. Lil just told me he has a cure :rolleyes2

LAW, I wait, I just say "tick tick tick..." they know they are wasting playground or center time and they hush quick. Our whole school does Wong's one hand attentive behavior thing. :spin:

Aqua~ it would be like having phone sex with Darth Vader...I can't breathe much less do it heavy

Bear~ I was out of zinc but I have used it in the past.

BI BI~ funny girl...my best girlfriend just called and said honey too. You smarty women.

Aqua 09-01-2005 06:12 PM

Hello?!? Darth Vader? Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :hot: ;)

wyndhy 09-01-2005 08:26 PM

garlic. a few cloves. something to do with mucus membranes around the vocal chords. when you lose your voice the chords are swollen and dry so, as with almost any malady~DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS! garlic in veggie broth would be a way to do both maybe.
and no talking. i read somewhere that whispering is tougher on your pipes than talking at your normal volume.

you shouldn't talk anyway cause you'll have garlic breath. :p

PantyFanatic 09-01-2005 08:54 PM

Does this mean you can't holler at anybody now?? :rolleyes2

<------- *wonders if there is such a thing as laryngitis of the fingers?*

AngelicVampires 09-01-2005 08:56 PM

I hear that taking some Vitamin C will help get rid of/prevent a cold....then again, I was going for the title of DVM...not MD, lol. :jump: Hope you feel better soon!

Lilith,

Actors swear by a spoonful of honey before they go on stage if they're beginning to lose their voices during a play run. I've had experience of this once, and yes, it does seem to work.

Also, if your throat is overly dry, chocolate, milk, cheese and other dairy produce are known to increase mucus production in the body....might help to lubricate the throat and vocal chords....

Failing that, I think Aqua's suggestion is your best bet....I'm sure the men of Pixies would club together to help out.

You've had phone sex with Darth Vader???? :yikes:

(PS ... I was going to say you could amputate the head ... but then I realized it'd mean :spank: or lots of  or maybe some :trout:. Wasn't worth it, so I take back that idea :bang: . :D :D )

No, no, no...

The mucus production produced by diary products creates the substance known as phlegm, which you will then have to cough back up, making your throat ever dryer. Milk is probaby the worst thing for you.

Sorry to be such a know-it-all but i had to take several singing classes in college, so I known some stuff about vocal health.

And yes, whispering is worse on your chords because it causes more air to go past them than actual speaking does, drying them out more.

FLUIDS, FLUIDS, FLUIDS....

Loulabelle 09-02-2005 06:33 AM

Apologies, I didn't read Lilith's post properly and didn't realise that her sore throat was caused by excessive coughing.....

I thought it was just dry (caused by air conditioning or talking to her to class so much) in which case my suggestion of eating mucus increasing foods, is actually a good one.

Sorry Lil, LAW is right, but I'm sure you realised that anyway.

I just spoke to my doctor and he indicates that to be a bad idea.

You can keep the head, but the neck's gotta go! :D

I suggest trying something that treats post-nasal drip. Dimetapp Elixir (the purple stuff) worked well when Mrs. WI similar symptoms. Or better yet...talk to the pharmacist in your local grocery store. They often know better than doctors what you should take. Hope you feel better soon. (((((Lil)))))

sodaklostsoul 09-02-2005 09:47 AM

Not to hijack this thread or nothing...but it's strange that the pharmacist know more about the meds and such that the doctors perscribe.

OzKristin 09-02-2005 10:10 AM

i was a screamer last night so my throat is also very sore

screaming at a concert that is.....lol :jump:

BigBear57 09-02-2005 10:13 AM

My old remedy would have been liberal amounts of rest and Wild Turkey. It has worked on occasion.

Not at all, when you think about it. There are new drugs tested & approved all the time. The pharmacist dispensing them needs to know all about them whereas doctors tend to wait for the sales rep to tell them about it.

Doctors know illnesses...pharmacists know drugs. ;)

Steph 09-02-2005 12:33 PM

Yep, dairy is bad. Pharmacists are smart peeps. My aunt is a pharmacist & saved her mother's/my grammy's life when she discovered that my nanny's heart was racing. She quickly deduced it was the medication. Without her, my 94-year-old phenom would not be with us today.

Who prescribed that medicine? A doc, of course. :D

Thanks for all your tips and concern. I just did my thing today and got through it. Now I plan to spend 3 days not talking.
