If Virginia is for lovers...

then what is where you live for?

maddy 02-05-2005 02:47 PM

I've heard a lot of derogatory things that make up Texas that aren't worth repeating, but I never did understand why Virginia is for lovers... maybe I need to take a vacation and find out. :) My "home" of Wisconsin is for cheeseheads though... and I'm a proud one.

On second thought,I'd like to retract my last statement!

maddy 02-05-2005 08:07 PM

Okay, some of the more positive things about Texas ... I had to look them up as I'm a transplant and wasn't privy to the Texas history course taught in the educational system ...

The state motto of Texas is "Friendship." The word, Texas, or Tejas, was the Spanish pronunciation of a Caddo Indian word meaning "friends" or "allies."

Don't Mess with Texas ... (started as an environment slogan aimed at litter control)

The Lone Star State (because the state flag has a lone star ... I didn't make it up, really!)

And then of course there's the universities... Hook 'em Horns and Aggies.

LixyChick 02-05-2005 08:20 PM

You've got a friend in Pennsylvania...but I am originally from The Garden State of New Jersey. Please don't hold that against me...

One more for Texas:

Recent tourism ads claim that "Texas is like a whole other country".

Meaning you can drive for 24 hours in almost any direction, if you live in the middle like I do, without crossing the Texas border. :cboy:

I would say ... "Texas is an adventure"

Master Scribe 02-06-2005 08:46 AM

Hey Hey...... Virginia is for lovers,,,the state started that little saying as a way to attract tourist to visit the lovely mountains and valleys as well as the coastal areas of the State. Now..Being a Virginia boy from the Roanoke Valley I can say that it is quite romantic to sit and watch the sun set or the moon rise. It is even more so if you are sipping some homebrew from one of our famous stills,,(LOL).

Sorry to say that I am now is southern Illlinois, would prefer to be in the heart of Dixie or at the least back home in Va.

Interesting! The only person I know from Virginia is from the Roanoke Valley too, and they claim that Richmon is the overpopulate area of the state, I'm beginning to disagree, afterall, the two people I've encountered haven't been from there.

At the risk of getting flamed, I'll comment that I often suspected this about Bush...given his obvious mastery of the English language. :yikes:

fzzy 02-06-2005 11:02 AM

I doubt that the saying had anything to do with Bush .... I remember hearing it from a person who lived in Texas in the early 80's for a brief time ... she even brought back a t-shirt with it on it .... she didn't much like it there and she saw the statement as true ... but in a negative way. Never been there myself, so I don't know either way.

Master Scribe 02-06-2005 11:02 AM

Hey Maddy...
They are so right Richmond is a really a crowded city however the Valley is a great big place and while Roanoke is really to large for me I still enjoying a visit to the quaint little town of Glenver ( located outside of Salem ) every chance I get....

Gotta admit that some of the most lovely ladies I have ever seen seem to come from rural areas like the ones that grew up in.....then of course they move to the big cities and everyone thinks that city girls are the most lovely..LOL :devilish:

maddy 02-06-2005 11:08 AM

I'm not sure I can attest to "Texas is like a whole other country" from my lack of experience with most of the world. But I can tell you that Texas is like no other place I have been. There are some positives and some negatives that go along with that. But at the end of the day, what place is 100% glowingly positive? Tell me, and I WANT to go there! Texas is also very, varied! You have the booming metrapolis that is said to be a cultural and world center in Dallas, while right next door in Fort Worth, you would swear you stepped into the wild west. Then you have the sparsely polulated west Texas, panhandle, the deep south where you really can't tell if you are in Mexico or the US, San Antonio, and Houston. If there is one thing that I can say that goes along with the quote, I don't think you will so many differences in any other state. But then again, Texas is not the size of any other state.

Nova Scotia is Canada's ocean playground :)

dicksbro 02-06-2005 02:51 PM

And, Illinois is ... er ... well ... ah ... the gateway to Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Missouri and the bathroom.

Actually, it's really not too bad except for it's roads.

maddy 02-06-2005 03:35 PM

Wisconsin... Chicagoland's playground :)

Connecticut - The Nutmeg State  Obviously we consume a lot of egg nog. :D

The motto - "Qui Transtulit Sustinet" (He Who Transplanted Still Sustains) That sounds too serious to make fun of, but why does John Wayne Bobbit come to mind? lmao

My personal catch phrase for Connecticut is "Halfway between Boston and NYC". :D
