Are you watching? IAKG does the happy dance
As some of you know, my four-year old daughter suffers from viral-induced asthma, has severe eczema, and has documented environmental and food allergies (wheat, chocolate, soy, milk, and peanut). Because the three are connected, her pediatrician last week referred her to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to a pediatric allergist/pulmonary doctor to see if we could get a handle on things.
Her appointment was this morning. Lots of talking, a physical examination and *major* scratch testing later...it turns out that her environmental allergies are minimal, and her food allergies have disappeared. We were given the option of letting her try peanuts/peanut butter at home, but we opted to have them do an "oral challenge" there instead. Fifteen minutes of peanut butter on the arm, fifteen minutes of peanut butter on the upper lip, and then two peanut butter and crackers later...and I have a girl that I don't have to worry about accidental exposure/ingestion of peanuts/peanut butter. This is a *huge* relief to someone who was excessively worrying about kindergarten next year. I was very impressed with not only the specialist she saw but also the resident who visited with us, who quickly identified an unrelated problem. So, here I was, worrying that they'd discover some *other* food allergies and I'd have to turn my world (and my cupboards) upside down, and the exact opposite happens. Sometimes things come out of nowhere when you least expect it, you know? :) |
YAY!!!! Good news!

I can only imagine the relief that you felt along with the elation! Those kinds of food allergies are nothing to sneeze at...and many don't realize how severe they can be. I am so happy for you and little IAKG!!! :D |

I can't imagine life without NutterButters.... very happy for all of you :) |
Great news IAKG. :D
|
IAK Thats great but be CAREFUL!!!!!!!! My daughter has those same food allergies. Don't let her overload on them or she will get sick! My doctor said if she does eat them, no more than every other day and only small amounts at a time. The effects of the food stays in your system for 4 days. If you notice her face breaking out, or little bumps on her body or her scratching til she bleeds, back off of them.:(
You know the best medicine for an allergic reaction to food is Alka seltzer gold. It doesn't have the aspirin in it so children can drink it. It saved my girl many times. |
Great news and great advice CGT!
I had a good feeling about this and am sooooooooooo glad it went waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than expected! THIS IS AWESOME!!! |
F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C news about your little girl, IAKG. :)
|
Wonderful! Bet the relief is enormous for you ... and her! So glad the situation is improving. :)
|
Thats wonderful news babe im so please for you
((((((((((HUGS TO YOU BOTH))))))))))))))) |
Oh sweety...that's wonderful news! Poor baby girl...those tests sound so sucky. She seems to have a strong constitution though...uh, just like her mommy? I think so! TY for sharing the happy news (((((IAKG)))))...and I'll keep good thoughts for her future!
|
You all, as usual are terrific. And, CGT, not to worry. We had to practically *force* her to eat the peanut butter crackers at the hospital yesterday. She's never had peanut butter before, and she doesn't like it. She is, however, thrilled that she can now eat granola bars which "may contain traces of peanut." LMAO. :D As far as the others, we'd gradually already added those back in already. It was just that awful peanut one hanging over our heads.
|
That's terrific news IAKG. Even if she doesn't want peanut products...it's gotta be a huge relief not to worry about the history and trace content of every single thing she eats.
<--- does the happy dance for you! |
I'm so glad for you and your daughter IAKG =)
that is good news indeed.. I never ever had any allergies when i growing up.. and still have yet to find any, but i know how bad it can suck. So it really pains me to see someone with an allergy like such.. |
It is good to hear. I know that has concerned you. The weight is lifted somewhat, eh?
|
OH WOW!!!! FANTASTIC NEWS!!!
I am sooooooo happy for you and your daughter!!! |
Isn't it funny that some allergies are outgrown.I have heard severa times f people no longer being allergic to something they once were. This is great news, something less to worry about.Did you say she was allergic to soy and milk? I'll have to agree with Larry.Stunning and Drop Dead Gorgeous are two very accurate discriptions that come to mind.
|
She made sure I packed granola bars this morning for her weekend with her dad. :)
Yes, she also tested positive about two years ago for milk, chocolate, soy, and milk. Let me tell you...the three-year old birthday party at day care was something. Wanna hear about a wheat-free, soy-free, dairy-free carrot cake? :D |
Yep, I used to be allergic to strawberries and chemical fertilizers we used here on the farm and I'm not anymore. So yeah you can outgrow them.
|
I'm curious IAKG did she colic bad when she was a baby?
|
Mostly, the problem was her eczema, which her regular allergist/pulmonary doctor said is the most severe he's ever seen. I can't tell you the number of different medications/procedures we've tried to manage it and her viral-induced bronchiospasms. (Until yesterday, they'd hesitated to use the "A" word.) In looking at her medical records, I took her in at about 2 weeks old and was told it was "baby acne," but, of course things deteriorated from there. It's amazing to me how many health problems are inter-related. She has gone through two sets of ear tubes (first at 7 months) and had her tonsils out at 20 months of age. Those problems are also related to her chronic food and environmental allergies.
It is entirely possible to outgrow allergies, or to develop them at any time. I have a number of environmental allergies myself--most notably all trees, all grass, all weeds, and all outdoor molds--and had an egg allergy as a child. I've eaten eggs just fine for many, many years now. However, two winters ago I went for my flu shot and ended up with massive hives about 5-6 hours later. After some testing, it turns out that I'm allergic to the egg protein used in the shot. I can eat eggs just fine because the protein is cooked and altered. Go figure, especially since I'd had the flu shot just the year before with no reactions. :D |
Congrats!!! I feel for ya. I hate it when kids have to suffer thru life's little mysteries. I was happy this spring when my 7 yr old's little nose did'nt keep running.
I wish you and your little one all the best!! |
You all are simply wonderful!
|
Yay! :D
*hugs IAKG and kid* :) |
ok IAKaraokeGirl I have to ask what are you wearing while you do this happy dance
|
LMAO @ Booger. A blue tank top, of course! :D
|
Glad to hear about the good news for your daughter and you.
