What would you do with 50k?

ok, I just read an article where a guy in argentina found $50,000 in the trash, and promptly used it to buy a house, two cars, and a corner shop. He's being sued by the women who's maid threw it away.

Got me thinking. For starters, I know 50K won't get anywhere NEAR that amount of things here in the states, but it can get you stuff.

So, hypethetically, if you were handed $50,000, tax free, and you lived as you do now, only with NO DEBT'S at all, what would you do with the money?

I think I'd live here still, use some of it to put a good size down on a brand new vehicle, and then start my own shop. Maybe dance stuff, maybe lingerie. Or maybe a chuck e cheese.

But that's what I'd do with mine.

How bout you?

TinTennessee 06-04-2004 10:05 AM

Well, first I would give half of it to my sister, even though she isn't speaking to me at the moment, she could definitely use the financial help. Then I would give $5,000 to my parents, because they deserve that and so much more. I would buy my youngest son a dirt bike, give my oldest son the amount of money that I had spent on the youngest and with the rest...I would take a trip out west :)

naughtyangel 06-04-2004 10:53 AM

I'm starting out debt free, eh? Hmmmm....the possibilities!

We'd have a down payment on a house, with a photography studio in the basement (I'll be good enough to make use of it one of these days!). We'd plug some money into the baby's RESP and a bunch into our RRSPs. After that...who knows?

WildIrish 06-04-2004 10:55 AM

I'd put it down on towards the principal due on the house then refinance to lower my monthly payment. It'd be nice to eliminate the car loans, but they wouldn't hurt as much if we had a lower house payment.

jay-t 06-04-2004 12:01 PM

I would do some remodleing on the house, then put the rest in the bank so ill be able to call in sick to the coffee shop someday when i retire

No, no, no... Think of yourself as debt free- meaning, you'd own your house and cars with no payments! ;)

Lilith 06-04-2004 12:15 PM

Rent a large house with a yard to begin my school.

WildIrish 06-04-2004 12:18 PM

Oh...I understand now. Hmmm...I guess I'd blow it all on booze and women.

:D

imaginewithme 06-04-2004 12:39 PM

$50,000 probably wouldn't last that long...so I am heading to paradise!!!!

Coach Knight 06-04-2004 01:15 PM

Pay a few things off, and maybe take a vacation.

Summer 06-04-2004 01:15 PM

With $50,000 I would buy a couple fixer-upper homes, fix them up, and rent them out! That is of course being debt free when handed the 50K.

Coach Knight 06-04-2004 01:19 PM

You know, I think I would take that vacation in Florida.

;)

englishrose 06-04-2004 01:59 PM

Not enough for me! Haha, the car I want is 300,000 + !!
Erm.... however, it would make for a pretty nice new wardrobe, and the actual clothes to put in it- lol

Nice Guy 06-04-2004 02:06 PM

Hmm since I'm already debt free 40k ok it would go into the bank and I'd just blow 10k of it on whatever. Probably strippers and booze.

Sharni 06-04-2004 04:46 PM

A trip to NZ.....and various other places in the world

I'd go and see my parents and spend time with them

Coaster 06-05-2004 05:04 AM

Pay off the kid's college loans and mortgage so I could then travel without worrying about making payments on time

dicksbro 06-05-2004 05:09 AM

Since I'd be debt free, I'd probably by new flooring/carpeting and furniture for the house; some minor repair work; add on an unstairs family/sun room and pay to have the lawn landscaped professionally. If there was some money left over, maybe a trip for my wife and I.

OzKristin 06-05-2004 07:57 AM

donate some to animal shelters/charities...some to my bf to pay off his still huge, student loan, some to my mom and dad and grandfather to do with it what they like...the leftovers go to my bf and I so I could go back to Aussie and show him a good time!

PantyFanatic 06-05-2004 09:21 AM

What does this say about where we have put ourselves in life? Gilly started out by saying “….only with NO DEBT'S at all,…”, then came back and said “No, no, no... Think of yourself as debt free- …..” after the first few posters wanted to “pay off” something. Yet, many of the replies want to “pay-off” something.

Are we so entrenched in being under the boot that we can’t even conceive life without a hammer over us?

It would seem to be one of the drawbacks of a credit based consumer economy.

LixyChick 06-05-2004 09:46 AM

I can just see that in-ground swimming pool now!

That is...assuming my two sets of in-laws (step and natural on hubbie's side) are debt free too, when all this windfall happened!

Gilly 06-05-2004 12:28 PM

I could use an inground pool, too.

huntersgirl 06-05-2004 08:11 PM

I still have no idea!!!!Too many choices...I'll think some more.

Englishlush 06-06-2004 08:04 AM

Go on a looong holiday visiting everywhere I've always wanted to - NZ, Australia, go on safari in Africa, white water rafting down the grand canyon etc, etc! I'd take a different friend along for each bit so i didn't get fed up wi them!

PantyFanatic 06-06-2004 09:07 AM

Can I be your friend in Oz Englishlush? I know some nice people there.;)

imaginewithme 06-06-2004 02:02 PM

How about buy lots of sex toys, panties and lingere and a trip to paradise.

PantyFanatic 06-06-2004 02:21 PM

...and we're taking imaginewithme along Englishlush. :jump:

imaginewithme 06-06-2004 02:38 PM

Cool!!!!!

darogle 06-06-2004 05:36 PM

I'd probably crap my pants and not know how to act.

:p

Actually, I'd put a down payment on an antique store/ art studio and set up shop.

Gilly 06-06-2004 08:17 PM

I wana go to one of the hedoinism islands. :D

Cheyanne 06-06-2004 08:56 PM

Well...I would finish the remodeling projectSSSSS in the house and purchase a decent vehicle that doesn't catch fire when the alternator goes out as one is pulling into the driveway and that same one has to open the hood and pour water on it so it won't blow up cause it has a MAJOR OIL leak from a "factory seal". <whew> Glad I didn't actually have to say that! And, if it that had happened to me instead of Cobalt, the damn thing prolly would have blown up!

PantyFanatic 06-06-2004 09:27 PM

No problem Gilly.:)

wyndhy 06-17-2004 09:46 PM

with no debt! that's the BEST part. i'd just take that and you could keep the 50K. but if i just HAD to spend it  i'd take all my daughter's cousins and their families to disney world for a week.

scotzoidman 06-18-2004 12:14 AM

Nah, 50k would only begin to get me outa the hole I'm in...

Loulabelle 06-18-2004 02:07 AM

Erm......Fussy and I would have a fantastic wedding and we'd use the rest of the money towards relocating back up North to live near his family.
