Name pronouncation

I have come across this name:

Jana

Is it pronounced "Jar-ner" or "J-ner" ?

If anyone knows, please do post here.

Lilith 02-22-2004 11:38 AM

Ja na short Aa sounds on both like as in banana

jseal 02-22-2004 11:46 AM

RyanČ,

I think Lilith's suggestion is correct.

BIBI 02-22-2004 11:55 AM

and if the name derives from dutch extraction it could be pronounced as "Yah na" like the composer Yanni

jennaflower 02-22-2004 11:56 AM

Lilith's suggestion would certainly be the "american english" pronounciation... but heck.. who knows with so many other versions of english and so many dialects.

dicksbro 02-22-2004 12:02 PM

I always liked to use the universal pronounciation ...

"HEY, YOU!"

:D :D

naughtyangel 02-22-2004 12:50 PM

LOL @ DB...always works!

I would pronounce it the way Lilith described, personally

Lilith 02-22-2004 01:01 PM

I have a friend with that name.

Sharni 02-22-2004 01:07 PM

Here it would be pronounced as "Yah-na"

lakritze 02-22-2004 05:19 PM

Jana Jana bo-Bana Bo-fanna fana fo-fana...Fi Fie foe fanna....JANA

RyanČ 02-23-2004 04:58 PM

Yeah, I agree guys, I've been pronouncing it as "Jarner" since I knew this name, and I think that is correct, as well as damn cute!

RyanČ 02-23-2004 05:02 PM

BTW guys, if you want some links to this Czech hottie, I'm only just a PM away!

LixyChick 02-23-2004 08:51 PM

OMG! I gotta ask this.....I can't control myself!

Ryan? There is no "r" in the way you spelled the name.....so why would you put 2 r's in the pronunciation?

<-----is the ever curious one....and hey....I gotta be me....so sue me! :jester:

Belial 02-24-2004 12:46 AM

Lixy, some Brits and most Aussies (and I believe some Bostonians too) pronounce words ending in "ner" as if they ended in "nah": eg: "Garner" sounds like "Gahnah". Americans enunciate the "r". That could be what Ryan is alluding to.

RyanČ 02-25-2004 02:24 PM

Top marks, Belial.

I've already had one PM requesting the links to Jana's sites. They asked me to place a link here so you guys can just click on it.

I don't want to risk getting banned from here, so I'm not gonna. Sorry, you'll just have to PM me along with your email addy, I'll be more than happy to forward the links to you.

WildIrish 02-25-2004 02:53 PM

When people ask a bostonian where the r in corn (kahn) went, their trademark response is "at the end of Toyota (Tie-yoter)".

Kinda like who put the g in ricotta!
