According to the Beeb, Myanmar is only reporting 53 dead. However, 124,000 people have been confirmed dead around the rim of the Indian Ocean to date.

The UN has warned the final death toll is likely to be more than 150,000.

2004 will have a note in a book humans seldom enter. :(

Well, there are tremendous relief efforts going on here, the international community, the army and all. We are finding that we were so fortunate to have escaped the Tsuanmi as it destroyed All the seaside resorts that we were used to going to. so, we have changed our daily patterns, and staying away from the ocean.

Let us all put a dollar

``All the planet is vibrating'' from the quake, said Enzo Boschi, the head of Italy's National Geophysics Institute. Speaking on SKY TG24 TV, Boschi said the quake even disturbed the Earth's rotation.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at a magnitude of 8.9. Geophysicist Julie Martinez said it was the world's fifth-largest since 1900 and the largest since a 9.2 temblor hit Prince William Sound Alaska in 1964.…
Tidal waves leveled towns in the province of Aceh on Sumatra's northern tip, the region closest to the epicenter. An Associated Press reporter saw bodies wedged in trees as the waters receded. More bodies littered the beaches.
Health ministry official Els Mangundap said 1,876 people had died across the region, including some 1,400 in the Aceh provincial capital, Banda Aceh. Communications to the town had been cut.…..

It isn't over...

The tsunami death toll continues to rise, with more than 200,000 people now thought to have died, according to the U.N.

Bill Clinton has been chosen to be the UN's special envoy for tsunami relief in South Asia.

He and President Bush's father have been travelling the U.S. to raise private funds for tsunami relief.

reminds you how insignificant we are to the planet it just washes us away in a few moments cherish every single moment as if it were your very last send what you can and light a candle and pray for the rest. I feel so very small right now..........

Some very nervous people in Indonesia are understandably paying close attention again. :yikes:

odd coincidence that the tsunami was the day after Christmas and this quake was the day after Easter.

Glad to hear that it wasn't as horrible of a disaster as the first, but my heart goes out to the many that it did affect.

They draw a line down the faultline and wonder when the quake will happen which will

splash on our shores here in Oz.

It is a terrible shame ... the new "aftershock" measured at 8.7. Hearts and prayers goes out to all the people in that area.
