We have Safeway, Sobey's, IGA, Loblaw's, Co-Op, and Superstore. I'm not aware of any Walmat in Canada that sells food - at least no in the west.

I think that Walmat will be reviewing its expantion plans in Canada. Two of its stores became unionized. More are talking about it. Walmat decided to close one of them. Walmat is fighting a bad PR image here right now. Walmat is being branded as a bad Corperate neighbour in the media.

Hmm... Wegman's... that narrows down where in NY you might be :D I also agree, one of the best super markets in the US. They go very much out of their way in the produce section to keep it fresh (the super Wegman's here gets delivery from local farmers in the summer twice a day!).

In any case, out here the two major players are Wegman's and TOPS. There are some other independents and also there are a pair (I think, one for sure) of Super Wal-Marts within 30 mins of each other.

Here we've got Ralphs, Vons, Pavillons, Albertsons, and of course there's a Walmart here too ....though I've never been in it. I grocery shop almost exclusively at Ralphs ... that's because the reason I usually go to the store when I go is because I need my water (it's a flavored, no-cal, no sodium sparkling water) and they are the store that carries it ... I don't drink coffee, or tea and very little soda ... BUT I must have my water!!!! :)

All the "big" stores are too far for me to travel to. We have a Redners and Weis (grocery) store close by...but as soon as they open the Super Wal-Mart that they are building about a 2 miles from me...I'm sure the doors will close on Weis and Redners.

As I said before...we have to travel for miles to buy a damn pair of underwear. It sucks living in Bumfuck Egypt!

When Home Depot opened pretty close to us (about 15 miles), all the little mom and pop hardware stores folded. It's sad to see that happening...but it's "progress" I guess.

*sigh* I remember Publix and Winn Dixie from when we lived in the Keys! Here in Pa. a person can't get a bottle of wine (or any alcohol) in a grocery mart. We have State Stores (liquor) and Beer Distributors, and have to make a separate trip for alcohol.

We have 3 Super Walmarts, 2 Home depots and 2 Lowes, within a 15-20 mile radius and I hear a Super Target is in the works.

For grocery we have: Kroger, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, and WalMart (all stores that I've shopped at) and then there are others that aren't near me and therefore haven't been too, Sak n Sav is one.... and Whole Foods has a fairly decent presence here as well.

I live 30 minutes from Wal-Mart corporate headquarters. There are 7 WM stupid centers along a 40 mile corridor. In fact, it's exactly 1.1 mile from my house to Wal-mart. They also have 3-4 Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets which is their grocery store concept (WM prices, small store feel, really like it, just not close enough to my house).

I don't like WM meat dept. We have a couple of small regional chains, Harps and Marvins that have much better meat.

I've heard that sometime this year (2005) Wal-Mart will surpass Kroger as the largest grocery concern in the USA.

I work in the trucking industry, and we see the effects every time a grocery chain goes under.

Oops I forgot to mention that one of the places I frequent is a small farm-to-market type store ... (but like many things here in So. Cal. it's high-end) LOL! I pay a bit more for anything I buy there, but the freshness and quality are better ... and when it comes to meats and produce, I'm willing to pay that little bit more for something that ultimately tastes so much better to me.
