That's where I live now
|
I grew up in a mid-sized town in Iowa...they're all so true.
But for my money, nothing will ever top the time we visted my grandmother who lived in a town of less than 100 people, about 6 blocks square. By the time we got to her house, somebody on the edge of town had seen our van and called her to tell her we were there... |
*LOL*...99% of those were sooooo true for me
|
All true growing up for me too...and I live in a town like this now!
My favorite memory of my home town is... Nana (my paternal grandmother) shouldn't have been driving still, with her glaucoma getting worse and worse and she was in denial about it. But, she was determined to be independent and who were we to argue with her. One day, as she was driving me back home from the local grocer's, she ran a stop sign. She hadn't been to visit in a while and they put up the sign at a road we used to just "cruise" through. I noticed she wasn't slowing as we neared it, and I figured she didn't see it, so I said, "Nana, slow down. They put in a stop sign up here. Nana...Nana...(zoom...right through it!). Nana! You just ran a stop sign". "No I didn't", she said. "Yes you did. There is one back at the corner by the Columbia Cafe" (a bar everyone knew as one of those landmarks to give directions by). "Well, there never used to be one there, so I'm not stoping at it now", she said...with all the dignity she could muster! Thanks for the memories GCT! |
Oh yes! I grew up in a town of about 200. (I think they were counting pets in with that) Here's a few I could think up...
It was ok to leave your doors unlocked on your house. Likewise, you could leave your car unlocked and running while you ran in to get something. You knew everyone in town, what they did, where they lived, what they drove, what their pets names were.... Helping at harvest time was an excused absence from school. You didn't have to dial the whole 7 digits to call someone. It was ok to just "walk in" at a friend's house. You could just charge things at the store, gas station, ect. just by signing the reciept. No plastic needed. You knew exactly which houses had the best stuff at Halloween. Stores observed "other" holidays such as opening day of deer season, kids birthdays, school functions, weddings, ect. and would close down accordingly. Everyone in town came to the school events, even if they didn't have kids that went there. Your teacher taught more than one grade. Anyone who moved into town (though viewed with a certain amount of suspicion) was certain to recieve either a cake, casserole, or pie from their various neighbors. :D And some true stories from my hometown...(I swear they're true!) My county newspaper (the towns were too small to have ones of their own) was roughly 3 pages long, and included a weekly article written by two old ladies in my town. It included such newsworthy events as who visited whom for Sunday dinners, whose kids came back to visit, who bought new cars and what make and model they were, ect. We still had "party lines" in town and could listen in on neighbor's phone conversations. Likewise we only had to dial 6 and the last 4 digits of the phone number to dial in town. People went nuts when they finally had to dial all 7 digits. We only got 3 TV stations and your night was shot if the President was on. I was able to go to the bar in town and buy my mom cigarettes and beer when I was 7 years old. She'd just call them up and say I was on my way. I could name everyone I went to grade school with. Not just my class...EVERYONE I went to school with! I had 6 people in my class and there was only 2 in the grade below me. They combined us right up till I went to high school. Everyone made the team at my school. You had to play sports, otherwise there wasn't enough people for the team. LOL |
