Grinding away!

What does it mean when you hear your computer making a grinding noise?

Is it just experiencing good sex or is it slowly dying?

Anyone out there ever have weird noises come from their CPU's?

not good Randygirl, not good at all.

The only time I every hear of a computer having sex, was durring a Webcam session,
and then the only sex the machine got was a
screen covered in white stuff (not me, I covered
the keyboard. hehehe).

If you cross A linux with a Unix you get funny
windows, but I doubt it counts as sex

My fan went bad... had my resident stud buy a new one and replaced it. I told him if my computer oveheated and shut down I would be unable to get to Pixies which would cause me to become overheated and shut down

sounds likeyou either have a fan going bad in the PC (CPU or power supply usually, though sometimes there are others in the case) or your hard disk is getting ready to give up the ghost.

I would try to isolate which of the ones it is... CPU fans are readily available, if it's the power supply then you need to replace the power supply unit (spares are not too expensive)... if it's not a fan then I would recomment backing up all your data in a hurry

I had this problem recently and it was the fan for the power supply. If you can, put your ear near those vents at the back of the computer and if the sound is coming from there, then that's what it is.

What you need to do is get a can of compressed air and blow all the cobwebs, dust etc from the fan every once in a while. It'll prolong the life of the fan, by reducing the wear on the bearings and prevent it from burning out.

What milktoast said!!

Back it up regardless, just for fun.

A stick of incense will show which fans are or aren't working.

watch the CPU fan especially if you have an Athlon CPU If its fan goes , your CPU will fry within 3 seconds, Intels arent so bad, it will most likely just lock up or crash.

Not a bad idea to back up anyhow...
