Not so much about the prices this weekend, but something that has bothered me for sometime now, why are gas prices always stated to three decimals and the last is always a 9? Such as 1.959. This caught my eye one day at a brand new Exxon station, their sign was erected and the last 9 was permanently fixed to the sign for all of the prices. Since then I have noticed that every gas station I go to has this pricing scheme, and no one I've asked to date has come up with an answer for me. So, brilliant pixies, does anyone know?

If it's any consolation,I watched a show,the other night,that said
that if you figured in the cost of living differences, the prices, were
higher,at the end of the Carter administration! When I worked at
Sikorsky Aircraft,as a Flight Mechanic,$3.90/hr was BIG bucks.This
was,around !969.I had a Firebird,set up for Drag Racing,
commuted about 22 miles each way & I was pissed off, when
Sunoco 260 went to (approx) .57/gal.It's all relative!Unfortunately, this is 2004 instead of 1969.Also,the world demand
is much higher.Sorry, but I would rather look at things as the
glass being 1/2 full then 1/2 empty. Irish

imalikalotapuss- the price is dependant on the demand. If it's a larger populated town, the price will be higher than if it's in a smaller town, or out in the middle of no where. Likewise, if you get off the high way for gas at a busy road, drive down a block or two and the gas will be 2-3 pennies cheaper.
We drove over to help our new divorcee friend move his house around today, and it was down to 2.03 on the way, then right at the corner by his house it was up to 2.11 still.
We also had a ritualistic burning today- I don't think there's anything left in that house that belonged to her. She left last week, and told him then, anything left I don't want, so just pitch it. He burned it instead. The only thing that stopped him from burning the wedding dress was that his aunt is going to use it for material.

Gilly: I guess that is what i never could figure out, the town i live in is about 30000, or so. The town just down the road is around 100000. The price is cheaper there by at least ten cents a gallon. The only thing i can think of is that we pay more because they want to make more from the tourists that come through. I can understand in the mountain communities paying more because of the longer haul to deliver fuel. It has always been this way and probably always will, but it really makes no sense.

1.929 where I buy my gas... up to $.10 more per gallon within the same town at different locations... I live in a tourist area which has 3 major lakes... it seems that historically in this area there is always a slight range of prices when the tourist numbers are up.. trying to make more profit off of them... tho it ultimately hurts us locals too.

We live,on a State Highway, that is (approx)2/3mi. before the turn-
pike to the mountains & lakes. There is a self serve gas station/
store about 3/4 mi.,from me.You can almost count on the gas,
going up,a few cents/gal,before each major holiday or weekend.
People come thru here, from the southern states.Winter:Skiing,
Snowmobiling,etc.Summer:Boating,Waterskiing,motorc ycling,
Laconia Motorcycle Week,Camping, etc. We have lived here for 25+
yrs. & it's almost like clockwork. Irish
P.S.Yesterday afternoon,I went there to get gas for my lawnmower. There are 4 islands(8 pumps) & all were full!Boats,
Trucks,Cars,etc.(Rt125)
