Unhappy How do you deal with office politics?

I'm usually pretty good at staying on everyone's good side but wondered if any of you have left jobs because of b.s. at the office.

I've been given the golden b.s. shovel by management at work. They keep promising things . . . I've just given up and am applying for other work.

Have you left a job because of gossip? Promises unmet? Other?

I keep threatening to leave my job but so far I'm still there. The disorganization is absolutely incredible. I've never seen a company that has so many meetings and still can't get it together after 12 years (how long they've been in business). Breaks at our company are just bitch fests.

I think business bs must be universal Steph. I've been promised several different jobs or jobs upgrades for around 3 years now. I work "unofficially" in the office as a..... hell I'm not sure what my title would be. I draft drawings for layout changes. Sometimes supervise their installs. I even occasionally work with maintenance carrying out the changes. When that work is slow I'm everything from a gopher to a secretary. So I feel your pain Hon. I knew taking an office job with long hair would probably have that proverbial glass ceiling so I'm not surprised. I keep thinking one day I'll move on but... I keep on keepin' on.
As for gossip, I've laid every female in the place according to the grapevine. I even had a jealous husband call me one night and ask me about his wife saying he'd heard rumors. I told him if the rumors were all true I wouldn't have had time to put on pants the last year! (and then I threatened him severely for waking me up LOL) I just do the best I can and let people think what they will. I like the guy I see in my mirror and most of those who spread gossip are just trying to distract themselves from their own dreary lives. I have to work and the bs is everywhere so I think just ignoring anything that doesn't harm me physically is the way to go. OK soapbox back in the corner. Best to Ya Steph Hon, maybe you can excuse my rantings. smooches

I left my last job when it changed management (Pastors) and he ddissolved both our school age summer camp and a preschool inclusion program for children with developmental disabilities (at the time we had 3 lil guys with Autism and 1 with Down's) that I had created. He said the insurance risks were too high. I said he was a bastard.

Before he came, I worked in Nirvana for 8 years. There are places that do not foster negative attitudes out there and you are entitled to work in such a place. If you work hard and keep your nose clean you deserve to have a pleasant working environment where people treat you respectfully.

Steph, give em the shovel back.......loaded

LOL Lilith, I am tempted!

I had a great interview last week for a writing job so I might hear back from them . . . I'm applying/looking for other jobs.

I was promised the moon at this place which made me stop looking for other work. The promises are always coming . . . can't say I believe them.

Oh well, I wasn't planning to stay there for long, just wish I wasn't misled.

Steph I took a great job with great pay once only to discover it was kind of like hush money. Not only were they breaking promises but laws as well.I left after 4 weeks. I hope the job hunt goes well ((hugs))!

Not very well, I'm afraid...being a smartass with a flair for telling the truth tends to put one on thin ice in a hurry...perhaps that explains why my current tenure of 5 years is a record for me...

Really.... I just wish that a person would be allowed to perform the job that they were hired for without all of the bs. Used to work at a place that I was recognized and praised for my work by the higheruppers. That didn't bode well for my co-workers, 1 in particular that would make my life a living hell after any praise was given in a meeting in front of everyone.

It got so bad, that I went to the boss and told him thanks for the praise, but asked him to not do it in a open forum. He asked why, and I told him, being the honest person that I was... (bad move).

There is always someone who is going to stab you in the back. When I left that position, I found out that the reason this woman treated me like that was because I intimidated her. She could not control me like she did others, and I was good at my job. Their loss, not mine.....

I do my best to stay out of bitch fests and back stabbing... I get along ok with all my co-workers, but there are a couple that I have issues with on a personal level, but it is personal so I leave it at the front door. My advice to anyone, (and I give it to people where I work pretty often ), if you're dis-satisified or unhappy, communicate this to the boss... if things don't change, start handing out the resume's. I know of a couple people at my work that had issues resolved as soon as Mgmt found out they were looking elsewhere. Not that it always works that way, but I really believe that everyone is responsible for their own happiness.

*Damn soapbox*

Good points, Aqua (and all). My main problem with my job is I'm constantly promised permanent status (which means a bump in pay and benefits) but it's beginning to feel like the carrot keeps getting yanked.

I'm applying for other work. It's going to be their loss, like Cheyanne said.

Is this an issue......or am I the only one who thinks this?

*Oh shit.....how do I say this without being stereotypical*

I've had a woman boss....and then I've been my own boss.....and now I work for a man. With that said............

The clash between me and the woman boss was so evident I HAD to quit after only 2 years! (I tend to stay in most relationships, personal or professional, longer than some would.....just thinking it will get better). I was under paid and, quite frankly, she would downgrade me at every turn she deemed necessary. But never once did the work I did for her.....come back as unacceptable. She just kept saying it would. She said she saw my potential and I wasn't living up to it. I shoulda punched her lights out.......BLAH!

I miss working for me......I was the best boss I ever had!

Now, I work for a man. He is extremely nice in a face to face circumstance. But, through bitch fests aforementioned, I now know that I am once again underpaid and only appreciated when things get so tense and deadlines are to be met. "Ask "Lixy"....she can handle it and we pay her so little and she is so good, we can't help but have a win/win situation"! I can just hear them now.

Don't get me wrong........I make pretty good money. But I know I am worth more.......and I have found out that a few fellow (male) employees......(who have only just started with the company and have nowhere near the talent I have and don't do anywhere near the amount of work I do) are making almost as much as I do......give or take $1.00 or two. I'm about to confront the owner (for the second time since I have been at this company) about this issue. They hate it when I am the one to call a meeting.......as I know they know it's gonna require some fancy footwork on their part and they are never prepared for what I have to say!

So, I guess what I am asking is...........anyone experiencing discrimination?.........or is it just me? One guy I am an aquaintance of, once told me that women put themselves in this situation on purpose just so they can bitch about something. I DID punch him.....just ask hubby.....he had to clean up my light work! LMFAO! He hates when I get demonstrative!

I was told by the incomming Pastor/bastard that he sure hoped that if I got upset about something I would not pout like all the other women he had worked with. I assured him that if I had a problem he would know it!

I have never had any problems with employers based on their sex. I have never had women bosses who were so shallow to feel threatened by my abilities. In fact I have had a couple I saw as mentors. Nothing better than good role models.

I try to stay out of the BS when it happens, but I have been thrown into the middle a few time. My worst one was my last job. I hurt my arm lifting something and was forced to file a workers comp case by the employer, so I did. Within a week they had an investigater on me very hard saying I wasn't hurt and it wasn't from lifting at work, yadda yadda yadda. Since it was worker comp my personal insurance wouldn't cover it, the investigator decided to have the doctors office file against me for the bills that the comp had already agreed to pay. The whole time my HR manager was lying to me and my supervisor creating problems for me in the work place. Long story short I ended my employment with a letter to the president, regional, and BBB.

I am probably permantly disabled from physical work and will live in constant pain, but my new job kicks butt. I've already stepped up and will be involved in a very large deal and get my own R&D team. I guess with the bad comes the good.

I'm so sorry to hear about your insurance problems, Deno. I'm so glad you're in a better place now!

Update on my office politics: Tonight, I was having a smoke with my supervisor during break. One of the worst employees in the place was called to task for his terrible work - poor attendance, poor quality service, low sales, and he takes too long to do his work. He tried to tell my supervisor about how me and a few other people cheat the system to make our statistics look better!

My supervisor is a buddy and he knows I'm doing good work, as are the other people this lazy bum mentioned.

I guess backstabbing is a part of life in many work situations. I always thought once I left high school 13 years ago that I would leave pettiness behind. Yes, I was wrong!
