I was worried that 1" all the way around wouldn't be strong enough, so I put 9 pieces of foot long rebar in too. lmfao
The damn thing weighs about 50lbs. ha ha ha

my inlaws suffered something similar recently, some punk kids riding by decided their mailbox needed a make-over as well and hurled a pumpkin at it....it is now in pieces on the ground and my husband is going to have to put one back up when they can manage to get us the stuff to do so.

A standard size mailbox fits perfectly inside of a larger mailbox with roughly an inch all the way around. Which holds about 1/3 a bag of quick drying cement. 
I think the rebar may have been a little excessive, but I was feeling quite passionate at the moment.
Home Depot also sells a "vandal-proof" mailbox for around $70, but my method was cheaper. I spent around $40. I did get the concrete for free cuz the salesperson liked my idea. He gave me a ripped bag. ha ha

VERY interesting thread. I LOVE your economic solution.  Much cheaper than what we came up with. LOL After working on the same type problem with a friend some years back, I'll suggest special reinforced attachment to the post. If you have any short lengths of railroad rail available, that works great boxed in with 1 x 4 and painted white. Light I beam will work too.

My entire property is located on ledge...I can barely plant a damn bush without digging up a boulder big enough to block the entrance to Christ's tomb. I'd have to blast in order to plant a railroad tie!
