"Passing" Thoughts

Hey everybody.

Later today, I'm going to the funeral service of a man who passed away in the early-morning hours of tuesday.

He was 6 weeks shy of his 44th birthday, two months younger than me.

He has a 13-yr old daughter - she's 6-months older than MY daughter.

He smoked 40 cigs a day from about 9 years of age - diagnosed with lung and liver cancer on Halloween last year.... my daughters birthday. One of the reasons I gave up smoking - the other being my daughter.

He was a simple man, but wanted for nothing.

He had the love of his wife and daughter.

He was out with frineds EVERY day of the week - a social life to rival anyone's.

He was generous to a fault, sometimes to his own detriment.

He suffered from Schizophrenia since he was 13 years old, although had been well for a number of years.

He never once, in the 5 years I knew him, lost his temper, complained, or even raised his voice.

He was my patient.

He was my friend.

I will miss him.

DM

Your friend sounds like a wonderful man who left his heartprint in your life. That's all we mortals can ever really hope for.

I send my sympathy for your loss and the hug to let you know I feel your pain. I hope the mourning is swift and the good memories take it's place for you and his family and other friends real soon!

PM me if you need to talk babe...

I've lost a lot of people in the past six years, some of them very close to me. It doesn't get easier and you always feel cheated out of having even one more day with them.

I'm truly sorry for your loss.

((((((DM)))))) ~~ A rich life can be lived even in only a short time. And a life is made even richer by having friends who love you.

I wish I could give you a hug.

Life's never fair, and sometimes damned unfair.

Relish the time together, rather than mourn the time you won't see him.

Thanks, everyone, for your wonderfully kind thoughts and prayers.

I've lost a few patients in the five years I've been doing this job, but none have affected so much as this. I think it's because he and I had so much in common, and I met with him anything up to 4 times a week, every week (except holidays) for all those five years.

The service was a "good Scottish presbyterian" one; that's to say, short, factual and devoid of any humour whatsoever. And that's a pity, because there are a fund of stories he would have loved to be told, but it just isn't the way things are done!

His family are bearing up well. My involvement with them was purely peripheral, as a result of my dealings with him. However, I will continue to visit and offer what support I can, and f*ck what my bosses say. We're meant to be in the "caring" profession, after all!

Thanks again y'all
