Remember When?

This is geared more for Brits, and I know similar things have been posted before, but......... I liked it.

So there!

Just for a minute, forget everything stressful and read this...............

Close your eyes and go back in time...
Before the Internet...
Before semi-automatics, joyriders and crack....
Before SEGA or Super Nintendo... even before Pac Man

Way back........

I'm talking about......

Hide and Seek in the park.
The corner shop.
Hopscotch.
Butterscotch.
Skipping.
Handstands.
Football with an old can.
Fingerbobs.
Beano, Dandy, Buster, Twinkle and Dennis the menace.
Roly Poly.
Hula Hoops, jumping the stream, building dams.
Bazooka Joe bubble gum.

An ice cream cone on a warm summer night from the van that plays a tune.
Chocolate or vanilla or strawberry or maybe Neapolitan or perhaps a screwball.

Wait.....

Watching Saturday morning cartoons, short commercials or the flicks.
When TV channels were BBC1, BBC2 and ITV ONLY.
When most of us only had a black & white TV
TV closed before 12:00.

The Test Card.
When so few people had a telephone
that you'd have to borrow the neighbours down the road
Games like French Skipping with all those Elastic Bands.
Playing Cats Cradle and Conkers
Children's Film Foundation, The Double
Deckers, Red Hand Gang, The Banana Splitz
Tomorrow People, Tiswas or Swapshop?, and 'Why Don't You'? - or staying up for Doctor who and being scared of the Daleks.
Black Beauty
Belle & Sebastian
Tin Tin.
Championnnnn The Wonder Horse..
The Waltons
Little House on the Prairie Nellie Olsen...... Eh!
Record Breakers
We Are the Champions and who can forget "It's a Knockout"? and Stewart Hall's laugh?
When Grange Hill was the best show on TV
. . . . . 'Flippin' 'eck Tucker'!
When Emmerdale was called Emmerdale Farm and was on in the afternoons, not evenings.
When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere.
Earwigs, wasps, stinging nettles and bee stings.
Sticky fingers.
Guiders....
Playing Marbles. Ball bearings. Big 'uns and Little 'uns. Cops and Robbers, Cowboys and Indians, and Zorro.
Climbing trees.
Making igloos out of snow banks.
Walking to school, no matter what the weather.
Running till you were out of breath, laughing so hard that your stomach hurt.
Jumping on the bed Pillow fights.
Simon Says
Spinning around on roundabouts, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.
Being tired from playing....remember that?
The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.
Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.
Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle.
Choppers and Grifters. Space Hoppers.
Eating raw jelly. Orange squash ice pops. Vimto, Jubblies, and Lolly Gobble Chock Bombs

Remember when...

There were two types of trainers - girls and boys, and Dunlop Green Flash - and the only time you wore them at School was for P.E. (and they were called gym shoes or if you are older - plimsolls or Guttys.)
You knew everyone in your street - and so did your parents.
It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends.
You didn't sleep a wink on Christmas eve.
When nobody owned a pure-bred dog.
Bins were made of metal.

When 25p was decent pocket money
Curly Wurlys.
Space Dust.
Toffo's.
Top Trumps.
Broken Biscuits bought by weight from the bakery
When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny.
When nearly everyone's mum was at home when the kids got there.

When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to
carry groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it.

When being sent to the head's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving pupil at home.
Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs etc.

Parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat and some of us are still afraid of them.

Didn't that feel good?

Just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that

Remember when....

Decisions were made by going "Ip, Dip, Sky Blue, it is Not You" or "One potato, two potato, three potato, four"
"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest.
Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in Monopoly
The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs.
And the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to one.
It was unbelievable that 'British Bulldog 123' wasn't an Olympic event.
Having a weapon in school, meant being caught with a catapult.
True, Dare, Double-Dare, Love, Kiss, promise or command....
Nobody was prettier than Mum.
Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.
Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin.
Ice cream was considered a basic food group.
Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.

Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.

If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED.
Pass this on to anyone who may need a break from their grown up life...

Go on... I Dare You ..... I DOUBLE-DARE YOU!

lizzardbits 04-25-2005 02:48 PM

LOL that was great!

Even Across the pond, some of the things were the same over here back when i was a kid.

Saturday mornings were for cartoons, and then after cartoons were over then it was time to go play outside at the park, no matter the weather. And coming inside for lunch and supper were a bother.
back when a big cardbaord box was one of the best toys that you could have---there were sooo many things that it could be
Back when it was ok to have an imaginary friend to sit and have a tea party with and to talk to your stuffed animals, an not looked upon like you were having mental problems.
Back when being a kid was fun, and adding a bit of physical hard work to your fun was part of the fun

Like Lizz said ... a lot of that I could remember easily ... and with great, great fondness. I used to love playing "Capture the Flag" on warm summer evenings. And, you know what, I miss the days when the TV shows were all something the family could enjoy. :)

Guess I'm just old and sentiment ... ah ... but those were the good ol' days. :)

Tahnks DM. :) Many of the points were spot on, even on the west side of the pond and the the whole warm-fuzzy was well enjoyed today. ;)

Playing on the man made beach at Tower Bridge when the tide went out
Swimming in the channel at Brighton or Hastings
When the A series then the M series roads had no speed limit

Etc Etc

Master Scribe 04-25-2005 08:59 PM

I remember catching lighting bugs in a jar..... thinking they would make a great latern

talking on tin can phones

Playing secret agent, or cowboys

I remember a lot simpler time....sand lot ball games, riding bikes up and down dirt hills, walking down to the creek and spending the day fishing and coming home with only a few fish which Mom would fix for dinner the next night

Dang I miss my youth

blkcat 04-25-2005 09:19 PM

Waaaay back then Oz took a lot of it's institutions from the Brits.

Lots of memories of when the most popular boy in East Tamworth's mum and dad

had a television, and he wasn't me.
